    Default Hardwire fuse source question

    Hey guys,

I am about to hardwire my STi and have a quick question. I have all the wires run already actually, but wanted to double check about the fuse to use. I would have preferred to just use the standard cig lighter fuse, but it is 15A in my car and the add-a-fuse I got from Roy specifically says in huge letters to use a max of 10A. Anyways, I was going to just go right into a 10A which is for a powered mirror (pretty sure it's switched but I'll test tomorrow), but wanted to ask what probably is a dumb question... besides amperage, are all the fuses the same? I assume all carry the full 12V, but just wanted to double check.

    Thanks.

Well some operate on less. . . but the power mirrors should be a constant 12 volt.

I don't think they are going to be with the key to be honest with you. Use your radio one.

I am not quite sure what you are talking about. I take it that the add-a-fuse which you got from Roy is literally a fuse holder with a wire on each end. If that is the case, then 10A is the maximum current rating for the gauge of wire used in the fuse holder.

Are you using Bel's hard wire kit which has a built-in inline fuse? If so, then you can simply connect it to your fuse box or tap it into your cigarette lighter's 12V power wire. The point is that no matter what, make sure that your STi has a 2 amp fast acting fuse installed on its direct wire cable. Don't use a higher amperage fuse for the Bel's direct wire cable since the direct wire cable's wires are much thinner (can't handle more than a couple of amps of current) and since your STi (if working properly) will never use more than 2 amps of current. The idea is that the 2 amp fuse will immediately blow if the STi's direct wire cord develops even a slight short or if somehow the electronics within the STi develop a problem.

If you are still not clear about how to proceed then post a couple of photos.

    Best Regards,

    --Michael
I think what he is saying is the add a fuse is like a piggyback with 2 fuses in 1 holder, so if he uses the cig lighter fuse at the box it is rated too high (15) I would find another fuse that is 10 amp and lower that is switched on just in case. I assume with the add a fuse the 2 fuses in the holder have to be the same amperage. The direct wire has it's own 2 amp fuse as MEM was saying so that would blow first since it is the lower of the 2.
