I noticed, on the box at least, that my 8500 X50 is "...re-programmable to detect future threats." Exactly what does that mean and how do I get it reprogrammed in the future if I need to?
That is just marketing lies, Belscorts aren't upgradeable. The only way it can be upgraded is to sell it on ebay and buy the latest and greatest every 3 years. The only truly upgradeable detector is the Valentine One.
Regardless of what some may say, X50s can be reprogrammed if need be. As far as I know there hasn't been a recommended software upgrade from Escort for the X50 (M4). The statement says in the event of future threats. There are no "new" threats, so your X50 is as up to date as it needs to be.
The original 8500 (non X50) box stated the same thing. And at first Escort had on their website that the original 8500 could be upgraded to detect POP and it would be available in the near future. But then Escort changed their tune and now say you can't upgrade the 8500 to detect POP because it requires a hardware upgrade. This is what Escort told me. However the box failed to mention that only the software is upgradeable for future threats. So Escort and Beltronics detectors are only software upgradeable. If anyone tells you different they either don't know or they are telling a lie. Maybe in the future Beltronics/Escort will build a fully upgradeable radar detector, but I don't think that is likely.
The only true fully upgradeable radar detector both hardware and software is the Valentine 1.
But people like me don't care as much about upgradeablility, I just want the best that is available. For example I use the Beltronics STi because it is the best radar detector available right now. <----In my opinion.
