    Default Mounting question

I live in the wonderful Commonwealth of Virginia where my Escort 8500 X50 isn't liked so I have to watch myself when I use it. I've had to take it down on several occasions when I've passed a cop that wasn't using radar and I'm concerned that one of these days they're gonna see me make a quick movement and know what I'm taking down and pull me over. The inspection sticker on cars registered in VA is located at the bottom of the windshield virtually right in the middle. Would it be alright to mount my detector right behind the inspection sticker? I just don't want to decrease my warning time. Thanks in advance for your comments...SpeedyJ

    Don't.

The detector laws where I live are far more stringent and hazardous than Va, and I have never had trouble where a cop "just saw it".

Keep in mind that here the cop has no right to search your person on suspicion of detector. Considering that Va is much friendlier towards RD's, I'd suspect that this also holds true there. So just put it in your jacket pocket or whatever.

Note that, IIRC Va doesn't have any Stalcar devices, so they can't detect presence of your Passport anyway.

Mount it on you sunvisor...and use (conceald display on V1) there should be something similar on the Escort so it doesnt light during nightime.

My first detector a cheap Whistler was mounted between the sunvisor and the car roof...just having the front of the detector looking at the road.

Aren't you supposed to mount it as low as you can though? It said in the owner's manual that the tinting on some windshields at the top could cause you a problem...

I live in VA and use my X50 everyday. I'm lucky enough to have a Grand Prix, 1997 to 2003 body style. Grand Prix windshield slopes a lot so i have to bend the metal bracket so the X50 is level when mounted. The good thing about the Grand Prix windshield is the tinted part comes down pretty far because of the slope. So i have the detector mounted right above the rear view mirror. I leave it up all the time and you can't see it at all, even if you tell someone to try to spot it. Also, Grand Prix's (without sunroofs i believe) have a cig lighter plug up top so I just plug right in on the ceiling where the plug is. I know it's bad to mount high because of laser, but i don't care about laser detection from my x50 (in fact i have it turned off) because i have a laser jammer for that. And even though it is mounted above my rear view it is still lower off the ground than it would be if someone mounted as low as possible on an SUV windshield. So my advice to you is get a Grand Prix, hehe j/k. I would advise to mount it behind the tinted strip and get it hard wired up there because you probably dont have a plug up top. And get a laser jammer especially if you drive in Northern VA.

Oh and BTW, if you get caught with a detector it's no big deal. They can't confiscate it and the fine is $40 plus a $55 processing fee(court fee if you go to court). Also, no points on your record. Even though Roy says VA has Spectre, I have driven a lot all over VA both rural and urban and never encountered a cop using Spectre. I think they just use them for federal truck ban, because they don't want to go through all that hassle to give someone in a passenger car a $40 ticket with no points.

Some people I know in the courier business have been caught with a detector. They caught them standing in between toll boths when the traffic backs up. Cops stand in between the toll boths and look for expired inspection stickers, tags, and other BS like that. Well the dumbasses I know saw the cop standing up ahead and they didn't take the detector down so the cop flagged them to the side of the road and gave them a ticket for using a detector.

Mount it on your visor. Make sure that it is level though

Default MOUNT IT HIGH ON THE VISOR!!!

I agree with happya$$, mount it on your visor and keep it level. Consider getting a strip of limo tint at the top of your windshield to hide it from outside view but make sure it isn't the metallized tint because that will mess with your radar detection. The tint might affect your laser detection but that is a fair trade off when considering cops and thieves.

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea mounting it up high on the visor or behind the tinited part(as long as not metal) when you get a blinder unit.
