I've been lurking around and reading for a while. I don't like joining forums that are new to me. That is unless the users seem to be intelligent and don't bicker like kids. That happens everywhere, after all it is the internet. But I am happy with the amount of information I have picked up and the relative amount of maturity in users responses.
I'll start out by saying that I own 1 RD that has been busted for a while, and I ended up here in search of a way to fix it or for replacement advice. I'm currently more broke than you would care to know, so it will be months before I can purchase/steal a new one.
Now onto the part you guys seem to enjoy...my busted RD is a Cobra 9110. I understand they are regarded as pieces of crap. I understand and have read plenty to confirm this. I bought it from a retail giant in 2001 when I was in high school. Go figure, I was way more susceptible to marketing hype/lies then. Any ways, I concluded on my own several years earlier that my particular cobra was "leaky". In fact I was entertained by flying up on people with RDs on the highway only to see them stomp on their brakes. Not cool, but funny.
Anyways, my Cobra will not power on as it blows fuses as soon as it is powered on. The original power cord shorted out and I replaced it with a compatible cable which is hard wired into my ignition. Always on adapter sockets suck, plus the hard wiring gave my dash a cleaner less cluttered look. It worked like this for a long time until I removed the unit to put in another car with the old repaired cable. Upon putting it back into my car with the new cable, it started blowing fuses. I really haven't put a lot of time into problem solving. But any suggestions would be helpful.
Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to say hi I guess.
I suppose once I'm in the green I'll be in the market for a new RD. From what I have read and concluded, I'll likely be purchasing an Escort 8500 X50 or whatever may be equivalent by the time I can afford it.
If you actually read all this...thanks.
