Ripoff. Scam. Don't work. Illegal. Being sued. They are WORSE than Cobra.
Stay away from RMR and Cobra get the Pro 78.

The XTR-690 will probably be cheaper than the Pro-78, though they supposedly have the same range.

    They both have selectable bands

the XTR690 and Pro-78 use similar engines. they get very similar results if not identical. i chose the pro-78 over the XTR690 for $15 more @ $137 shipped from amazon because of the nicer LED display, and somewhat useful rubber dash pad. it also comes with a hardwire kit if u know how to use it.

the compass in the XTR690 was useless to me since i have navi and the lcd screen is nice but not as nice as the pro-78. to me it is worth the $15

XTR690 for $116 shipped from bestbuy after $5 coupon

After going from a $120 detector to a $400 detector I truly saw how much difference there is in range and detection.

Reflecting over this now I can honest say that I think I am better off without a detector at all than having a cheap one up on the dash. A detector can be detrimental.

I've gone 16+ years without a ticket. All that time my Bel Micro-Eye XKR radar detector was packed in a box somewhere in my trunk. I simply drove with common sense and the few times I did get pulled over I always got let off with a warning. Before that I had the detector on the dash and when I got pulled then for even minor violations once the cop saw the detector, a ticket was imminent.

If you do decide to get a detector you must realize that even the best unit made may only protect you at best 95% of the time from Radar. The cheap ones drop that down to about 90%. That 5% difference could cost you more than both a Bell STI and a Valentine V1 put together in its lifetime of ownership.

Keep in mind radar is only one of the many methods on how LEO's catch speeder.

    Default RADAR CHOICES !

Hi All, new to the forum, been reading and researching for two days. Looking for something under $100, but did not find much except the Cobras. Yeah, i know, stay away. So this thread was perfect for me.
One thing is for sure, there are a lot of GREAT choices out there.
Unfortunately, I can't afford the vast majority of them, and going fast is not a habit I can break.
After two days of searching the net, I have this list and I would appreciate your comments and advice.
Of course, i would like to just buy the cheapest of the 5, but I think you folks have a lot more experience with the current products and coming updates than i could, even if i spent a week reading this fantastic forum.
    ok, here's the list;

    $95.59 Whistler XTR-520 Radar/Laser Detector
$99.99 Whistler XTR-185 Wireless Radar Laser Detector
$101.95 Whistler DE-1773 Radar Laser Detector
    $103.95 Whistler DE1743 ALL BAND & LASER/RADAR DETECTOR
    $111.99 Whistler XTR-690 w/ GOOGLE CHK OUT

I'm guessing that most of you will tell me to go with the XTR 690 after reading all the great info about it and the PRO-78. (I also read VEIL GUY's review. But have not found the PRO-78 in my price range).
If that is true, I need to know the implications of buying the XTR-690 thru BUY.COM. Sure, i would like to buy it from Radarbuster, but if I am going to get one, i can't afford them, and i need a new one NOW since my antique UNIDEN RD3000ZX finally crapped out on me, so it's time to buy a new one.

If anyone knows of a better deal to get a better unit, let me know. I don't mind doing the research.
I live in Houston TX and run the roads mostly between here and Stephenville TX and the coast, with the occasional to trip to central Mexico and Veracruz if that helps on what radars i see. I surely don't know which ones are used around here by the Local LEO's or the HiWay patrol.

Thanks to all for all comments and advice.

    Default Michael B and Radarbusters

I know I am new here, but I am a little curious about who Michael B is. ? Is he a retailer ? Repair shop ? I think I would want him to answer my question about the implications of buying from BUY.COM if he is the guy that I would need to go to get an update.
And what is the relationship between radarbusters and radardetector ?
I don't mean to step on any toes, just curious.
If needed, I was thinking that if there is a problem getting updates by buying thru BUY.COM, I would have to go to radarbusters and just get the XTR-520, since that is the only one i can afford and is NOT a Cobra....

    thanks

Michael B is an engineer for Whistler. Radarbusters is the sales site, radardetector is the forum associatedwith it.
