Being that I'm a senior in high school next year, my family planned a trip to one of my top picks for college, the University of Wisconsin, during the time we would be back there visiting family and bringing furniture back from my grandmother's house. I was expecting to be able to do some reporting with the brand new XTR-690 I bought, figuring that we would meet up with plenty of LEOs over the course of 1300 miles. We left San Antonio yesterday at around 3 and after about 26 hours, I am here to give you not a Whistler report, but a police report.
My sister gave my mom some presents to give to my cousins who live near Ft. Worth, so we decided to stop and visit my uncle there, expecting only to talk for a few minutes and be back on the road. We met them at an Olive Garden right off I-35 and went inside to talk with them, for they hadn't finished dinner.
After not more than 20 minutes, we went outside to get the presents for my cousins, only to find that our $40,000 dollar minivan had its windows smashed. My heart nearly fell out my a$$ because we had some valuable stuff in there. I mean we were on a trip for crying out loud. We had cameras worth a combined nearly $2000, credit cards, hundreds in cash, video game systems, pictures from a trip to Italy, phones, the radar detector, and a bunch of other stuff. All of it .................................................. .................................................. .. left in the car. This happened not 50 feet from the entrance to the restaurant. Luckily people sitting outside heard the glass shatter and went to look, scaring him off without too much in his hands. They said he was swerving too much and they couldn't get his license plate.
He didn't get away totally empty handed though. He stole my mom's backpack, which had her brand new glasses, 30 bucks in coins, books, and the most important part, all of my academic records - ACT, SAT, and AP original score reports and report cards along with information on our meeting with the University. Things with almost no monetary value to him and plenty of value to us. For all we know, he probably dumped on the side of the road. He also managed to get a bag of about 40 dollars worth of Bath and Body Works products for my cousins. Some good that's going to do him. Even though all this happened we managed to not get too unhappy for not only did he leave thousands of dollars of stuff, he politely took our bag of trash too! :P
But back to the story, the cops didn't come for 2 hours, leaving us stranded hours from home and even more from our destination in a parking lot with a car that's windowless. Nothing was open to fix the window so insurance had us call back in the morning while we stayed at my uncle's house. Unfortunately, no place in the whole Ft. Worth/Dallas area, for some reason, had the right glass for our car, so we had to turn around and head back home.
So after over a day of driving and sweating, we're back to wear we started, back a about half a grand, but relatively unscathed. We get the windows fixed Monday, and then it's back on the road. Hopefully, we can reschedule the meeting and get there quickly and safely. Then I will be able to give you a real report on the RD. What I can tell you is I get a pretty good detection of K band from about a mile and over 3 hills, but he already had a guy pulled over. We also got a few alerts from about half a mile of cops going in the opposite direction. Only thing I really noticed was strange X band ramp ups that seemed legit on I-35 through Austin, but not once could I find a cop. Oh well. That's the least of my worries right now.
