This is where the magical Arrows are really cool
I was cruising down I-95 when I started picking up a K band source in a spot that's usually clear. I was moving with the flow of traffic, so I checked my mirrors, didn't see anything that could be a LEO, and brushed it off. But...it didn't go away. It kept coming back. As I took my exit, it started getting stronger. There was an S550 in my rear view, and the closer it got, the stronger the reading was...and the counter started reading multiple sources. Sure enough, when it got close, I changed lanes, braked, and saw the arrows change from behind to side to front as I let it pass me.
I followed for a few miles, checking every position, left, right, ahead, behind, and the arrows pointed straight towards it the whole time. The counter varied between 1 and 4, depending on how close I was...I'm pretty sure there were 3 independent sources, and the one or two times I picked up 4 were probably due to reflections. Could be wrong, though.
If it had been Ka, I wouldn't have been surprised...leaky Cobra, big deal. But I'm not sure why it would be broadcasting K-band...and I checked the windshield multiple times, nothing there (although that doesn't rule out something stealth mounted or bumper-mounted).
Maybe this could be one of those lane-change or collision avoidance systems? Do any of those operate on K-band? I thought they were all Ka.
This is something we should probably look into...and if your RD starts going off while there are no cops in sight, but there IS an S550...maybe you should check it out.
