I have an XTR-690 and was wondering if it was possible to hardwire it without buying the hardwire kit. In other words, just using the regular plug and modifying it.

Back in 1998 when I was running my old Uniden LRD6299SWS I cut the cigarette adapter off of the wire and spliced it to the back of the cigarette lighter BEHIND the console. Now this was not the best idea, i was still a teenager, it worked absolutly fine, the only drawback was there was no fuse, but i didnt have any problems for 3 years running like that. So i would say yes it is possible to hardwire it just by modifying the existing plug, but if its advisable, thats a crapshot. Maybe some more of the fine people here could lend thier expertise to this question.
Yes, it is fairly simple. However I would think it to be a kind of thing where if you have to ask, you probably will have trouble doing it and should just buy the kit
Yes, solder a postive and negative feed wires to the cigeratte adapter then surround with electrical tape. It will work just fine, but paying $20 for an adapter is a better choice.
haha, yea i wouldn't know how to do it so i guess I'll just by the kit. Anyone know where you can get it besides straight from Whistler?
Ummm Ebay.
Hope you can find the hardwiring instructions useful:

BTW, the kit costs just $10 @ Whistler website. Is that too much?
all i did was cut the cigarette lighter adapter off at the end
then crimped those 2 wires with some extra wire i had and put the red (hot) wire in the ignition fuse in my fuse box and my other white (ground) wire to a solid metal piece attached to the (for the most part) whole frame
Did you install a fuse (incase of power surge)?
