Default Help me choose a radar detector!

I am new to detectors, but I want an entry-level $30 detector. Which one is better, the Whistler XTR-140 or the Cobra XR-1050? Thanks alot!

    Default won't

Probably won't find much for $30 in terms of radar detectors, but of the two, I would choose the Whistler.

Yeah, I would lean to the Whistler if the only option are those two. For about twice the price, you could get a Pro-58 though, prolly alot better range, and several more features, just a suggestion.

I wouldn't even bother with getting a $30 detector. It'll false so much and it's not going to protect you from much so it'll keep you from wanting to buy another detector in the future.

The $30 might be just fine, I have a $30 detector, it runs in the wife's car, it doesnt false, ever, its saved me at LEAST 10 times, twice on laser. I suggested he buy a different model maybe for more features or some better range, not if it falses, falsing is the worst argument for not buying a detector. If a detector goes off it means its getting a radar reading, and "falsing" is good because it means its WORKING. Example, I bought a Uniden on fleabay recently, I used a gas station down the street to test it because it wasnt going off in my usual places. The $30 (working) Uniden in my wife's car gives the SAME alert as my $200 Bel at that station. The one from fleabay unfortunately didnt make a peep, its broken and ive received a refund. There has got to be a better term then falsing, its real radar, its not a false, its doing its job. If the detector goes off for no reason, THATS a false, and there is something wrong with it. But honeslty, Ive never had any detector ive used go off without a source of radar. If its all you can afford man, I say go for it, but youve posted here, hehe, youre hooked, youll get something better soon enough.

You obviously have never owned a Cobra. Those piles false Ka about every half mile (must detect its own LO). Which leads to their owners swearing (thinking) that they are the bomb (they detect cops everywhere) what a crock of duke!

Youre right, Ive never owned a Cobra, most likely never will unless one is given to me to play with. But again, thats why i said theres something wrong with it, a detector should not go off unless it DETECTS radar or laser, period. If it does, its not a false, its doing its job.

I'm going to be honest with you, a 30 dollar detector will give you
a false sense of security. You need to look more around the $160
range for a decent detector that will truly give you the Radar sensitivity
you need for long range and " Instant On " encounters.

Of those three you should surely choose the Whistler.
Whistler makes some good detectors. The Pro 58, 73, and
    78 are very nice....

Just a word of warning, stay away from Cobra detectors.
Cobra are pretty much the worse detectors made on the
market. They make them look cool as a marketing tactic.
most people see the low price, slick design, and deceptive
description on the package and assume it must be a state
of the art detector. Trust me, they are not. In fact, they
make other high end detectors false because of their
    leaky frequency design.

If you want a great detector, go with either a Whistler
pro 78 or a Beltronics 955. Well worth the investment.

Hope this helps you decide..... :-)
