Default Hi, I like to get some opinions

    Hi everyone.

I was cruisin this web forum for a while and I finally decided to ask for some opinions.

I own a Whistler 1610 radar detector. It did well for it's time, but I think I need to upgrade . If I remember right I got this about 4 or 5 years ago from BestBuy. As of today it still works and beeps away, but not sure how accurate it really is for now-a-days technology versus cop radars.

It still does warn me, but not by to far of distance.

I am looking for a new radar detector, but I do have a budget. I really do not want to spend more then $280.00. Is there any good ones close or right into this price range that you recommend me getting?

I am about to make a trip out to LA and need one.

-Oh , one I was looking at was a Escort X50 (8500). Is there something for the same money or even less that you feel would be a better deal?

    Thanks a bunch all.

Jump onto radarbusters.com and see what Roy can get you on prices. The X50 with red display is close to your price range.

There's also the Bel RX55 which is cheaper, but not as good as the "big 3".
If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

yeah definitely what I would do, at that price you are very close of the "Big 3" the X50 seems like a good choice

    Who makes the BIG 3?

Also is PNI any good? Seems the ROY has some some ratings at 4 out of 5 and are less then $200.00 bucks.

"Big 3" Valentine 1, Bel RX65 and Escort X50. The Escort X50 is in the price range you wanted. Call Roy (who owns this site) and Radarbusters.com and see what he can do for you.

The "Big 3" are the Valentine 1, Escort X50 and Bel RX65. These are considered the three best detectors on the market today but they each cost $300 or more. The red-display X50 is the least expensive of the big 3 and close to your price range, which is why I recommended it.

I haven't heard much good about the PNIs. They're cordless detectors if I recall correctly, and cordless units usually sacrifice performance for convenience.

As far as the PNI goes I have not seen alot of members here talking about them.
Roy did give it a pretty good review.

I also use a Whistler PRO58 and for the money I do not think it is to bad of a unit, It seems to false alot in my area but I am thinking I might have gotten a bad one and I think I will send it back to get it looked at.
But anytime I have gotten a real threat it has given me plenty of time to slow down.

You might look at the PRO73 same as the PrO58 but has voice alerts.

Both of these units are way under your budget and if you have Laser in your area you could buy a can of Veil and a few $ left over.

Good luck on your decesion and let us know what you do get

The X50 detects laser but if you have no other countermeasures (Veil, Laser Shield, jammer etc.) a laser alert usually means you just got clocked.

Your best defense against laser (other than using countermeasures and/or always driving slow) is to keep your eyes peeled. Laser traps are usually easy to see, and if you watch the cars in front of you, when you see sudden braking it could mean something is up ahead.
