Iím a little confused about a basic radar issue. How does a RD detect ďinstant onĒ radar, in sufficient time to allow you to react?
Hereís why I ask: I recently bought a cordless Solo S2. (I know cordless is not nearly as good as corded, but I just hate having cords hanging everywhere, and at the time didnít want to get into a permanent mount situation.) It seems that in the routes I drive most often, the way cops use their radar is: I come around a corner, and I see the cop, he sees me, and then he flicks on his radar and BOOM my radar detector screams at me and heís already got me clocked. My RD thus does absolutely nothing for warning me in those situations.
Now, I could be describing this situation wrong - maybe his detector comes on automatically when I come around the corner? - but thatís the way it appears to me.
For the record, I believe the Solo S2 does not have PoP detection
(Which is the instant on detection, yes? Apologies for my ignorance.)
There are a few times when Iíll find a cop just sitting with his radar ďonĒ and the Solo seems to do a fine job of picking that up. Again, I might be describing this wrong.
The reason this has taken on new importance is that I just got a ticket for going 22mph over the limit. I think I can fight it and get it lowered so my insurance isnít affected, this time. But the next ticket I get is sure to cost me A LOT of money. Like, a lot.
So, aside from wanting to know how this whole ďinstant onĒ thing works, part II of my question is:
Given my description of how the cops seem to act around me (I live in NYC, and drive general within a few hours of here), do you have a particular recommendation for a new RD? At this point, money is no object - I think Iím willing to spend the $1000+ to get it professionally, permanently installed, with no cords. Maybe a laser jammer, too. So whether I do that with a V1 or X50 or whatever seems like not the big issue, money-wise.
Basically, with my new car I canít drive 55, as the song goes, and I canít afford another ticket.
Here are a couple things to consider with regards to your recommendation:
- I sometimes drive with the music on REALLY loud. So the RD should be really loud, or bright, or something. (I donít suppose thereís a permanent install that has the RD automatically lower the volume of the radio when it goes off, like my car does when my bluetooth phone rings?)
- Iím planning on having a permanent install done. If it could be ďstealthĒ, eg, hidden in the rearview mirror or that kind of thing, even better. So if one or another model is better for that...
- Iím not a fan of false alerts. It makes me start ignoring the detector, and thus slows my reaction time way down. (My big concern with the V1, just from what Iíve read.)
- While weíre at it - any suggestions for some sort of laser counter measure to go along with the RD?
Finally: anyone have any recommendations for good installers in NYC?
Sorry for the long post - and THANKS ahead of time for your thoughts!
