Default Which would be a better detector for me?

I live in South Ga and do most of my driving around town. I also do a good bit of drving through the country on the weekends...so I would like a detector that would alert me if something was around a curve or on the other side of a hill. I think I've narrowed it down between the Escort 8500 X50 or the V1....just don't know if I really want to spend that much money on a rd if Im mainly going to be in town. Any input or other suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Get the V1 and we can help you program it for around town if it's a little to chatty.

Actually, I would recommend either the Escort 8500 X50 or either the Bel V965 or V995 since you mention that you aren't sure if you want to spend that much money for a V1.

Also, since you mention that the majority of your driving will be in town, you might want to look at what types of microwave door openers are installed at the local grocery stores, drug stores, and shopping centers. The new K band door openers are nice little black surface mounted modules above each door. The older X band door openers generally are rectangular box modules mounted on brackets. If you spot mostly the newer K band door opener modules and if false alerts in town would be very annoying to you, then you really have only two choices for a relatively quiet radar detector for in-town use -- either an Escort 9500i or a V1 programmed with a delay and signal strength level for K band alerts. If your town still has mostly X band door openers, then the X50, V965 or V995 will serve you well since they all feature City modes to reduce X band alerts.

Well, thats my two cents worth!

I agree with both of the previous posters. From your description, I personally feel that the V1 would be a better choice because of the better range. Don't get me wrong, the 9500i has always given me more than enough warning (not including IO for which no detector will help you if you are the target), but for you I'd get the V1.

I've been very happy with my X50.
Very good detector and quiet as well.

Go with the V1, don't waste your time with Bel/escort if you don't have too.

Well guys, the wifey doesnt want me to spend no more than ~$300 on a rd. I guess the 8500 x50 is looking pretty good right now.

And just where exactly are you buying used V1's for $250? The last V1 I saw go for anywhere NEAR that went for $245, and it was BROKEN. I want to know where these $250 V1s are being sold, I want one.

Any of the Bels will give you plenty of around the curve warning. Well, I wouldn't buy an RX-55. But otherwise...buy a 955 and you can at least turn off X in city mode. Sure a V1 is the best, but for the price, the Bels can't be beat. I wasn't expecting much out of my 955...I figured it'd be a step above my crapras but...I have been pleasantly surprised by it's Ka range!
