Hey guys,
I've lurked on here for a while and decided to post. I've read through a bunch of threads on here and done research, but I’d like for some input from the good people here
A little background first... Live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Father has a Escort 8500 x50. He lent it to me during the summer while I was taking a trip out to BC. It saved me for sure. It was a flat secondary highway, but it went off when the car in the distance was just a speck. It was RCMP using either K or Ka band I believe. Can't quite recall which one, but I’m sure many of you know what band RCMP use in their cars.
I've been debating about getting one for myself. (Use would be mostly city driving with daily commute taking place on freeways, 100kph+) Currently I’m using a...you're going to get a kick out of this...cobra trapshooter or something like that. (I know, I know) The thing is probably 20 years old and in reality is just a paperweight. It doesn't do anything. There are a multitude of photo radar vans parked on Calgary streets that it doesn't pick up no matter what way you're coming up to the thing. I believe it went off on one trip out to BC, but I’m not betting on it saving my butt anytime.
Another thing you guys may be interested in is the fact that number of tickets cops have given out here in constriction zones this year as compared to last year has tripled. See this story:

The other thing to consider is that I have read here that the cops here use laser at stationary posts. Now I know I shouldn't expect a detector to pick up laser, as it is much more concentrated and aimed at the front grille of the car, but any little help I can get would be nice.
My budget is around $300 or so. I don't really want to spend for a V1. I think my options are RX65, 8500 X50 and maybe 955. STi isn't necessary in Alberta and I’m not sure if the detection is improved over any of these other units and it and the 9500i are pretty much out of my budget. I will only go for those if you guys think there is a significant increase in detection over the others worth spending $150-200 more on.
Laser jammer is also out of my budget, for now anyway. I believe I read on laserveil that the x50 and the rx65 were exactly the same in performance until the new upgrade to the x50. Now the x50 has better laser detection than the RX65. So if that is indeed the case, looks like I should go for the x50. I would prefer to try out the RX65 just to change it up as my father has the x50, but if the x50 is the superior unit, there's probably no reason to not go with it.
Thanks for any advice.
Cheers!
