    Default Two quick questions

    I have two questions:

I have an 8500 x50 and I take it out of my car every night (I have the hardwire kit)...Is this damaging my rd at all? Do you think the plug/outlet will get worn out?

    And my other question is:

As I was taking my rd out of my car tonight, it wound up getting dropped from about 2.5 feet onto my cement driveway (Long story). How much shock trauma can these take? ...Or is it send it in under warranty since there are no visible marks.

Oh yeah, and I searched but came up with nothing.

    Thanks

    1) You are doing no real damage to the unit at all by taking it out everynight. It is probably a good thing, as compared to being stolen etc... etc...
The RJ-11 connection (plug) may go bad after awhile (I have had this happen only once before), but since its just a simply telephone wire, its a cheap replacement; all that happens is the little plastic tab that 'locks' the connection into place everntually breaks off.

    2) Yeah, thats very very bad for the unit, and they can't really take much abuse like that at all. They are very sensative bits of equipment. (IMHO, its much worse then dropping a cellphone/pager) I would get it looked at, and I would be shocked if you werent having self-cal or service-req message within a month or two. You may just be lucky and it got away unscathed, but they certainly CANNOT take that kind of punishment many times at all.

Yeah, dropping your detector would be a bad thing.... they definitely would be classified as fragile electronics, finely receiving instruments rather than something like a cellphone or laptop. If you can, it's probably not a bad idea to send it in to "have it looked at" because "reception range seems to have decreased" for "no apparent reason" "wink wink" ;-)

Drop my X50 rev 5 several times from mount down to floor. Poor suction cups... :x :x But still works like new.. Unless it falls on a concrete floor..

    Thanks for the replies...

This is my second x50 and I still have 8 months left under my 1 yr. manufacturer's warranty, so I think I'm going to hold off unless I notice the range is going bad or if it asks me for calibration.

Great board filled with lots of good info.

If anyone else has anything to add thanks again.

I've also dropped my 3+ year-old x50 (Rev.5) quite a number of times - not on surfaces that are as hard as the OP's, but still, a drop, of a precision piece of electrical equipment, is a drop. ops: No problems here, either.

Azonehits, bro, you might want to look in to somehow safety-tethering the detector to your windshield - a Zip-Tie of the cable onto, say, the rearview mirror pillar will do quite nicely, particularly as small Zip-Ties are very, very hard to see (thus aesthetically pleasing), and the RJ connector is strong enough to hold the detector's cord in as an "anchor" during such a short distance "drop."

This is also recommended practice for spririted/enthusiastic/sports drivers, who do not remove their detectors before engaging in such activities.

So I guess the advice is use it until it tells me to reformat it? Other than that, if i'm not getting the usual signals I should be send it in?

Yep, keep using the X50 until it starts giving you 'self cal' or a 'service required' message. Who knows it may eventually never do that until quite some time.

If it's not getting the usual signals or you feel decreased detection range or sensitivity, then by all means send it in since you have 8 months left in warranty.

I don't think I've dropped my X50, but it has been banged a little.

    Flashed-Powerstroke-take-off + Not-so-sticky-Whistler-non-slip-pad = X50 banging against the shifter. ops:

So far it's holding up. *knock on wood*
