Some of you guys might find what the general public (ok, the better-than-average informed nerdy public) think about radar detectors. Over at DSLReports, we recently had a guy open a poll as to how many of us use radar detectors.
Long story short, currently it's like 27% yes. In the comments of the thread, many people seem to have often mythically exaggerated reasons as to why radar detectors don't work. The most common were:
(1) X years ago, I bought a radar detector (brand not specified, I'm more than willing to bet a Cobra RMR or some other widely marketed junk) and it failed to warn me for a ticket.
(2) ALL COPS use instant-on for which any radar detector is useless.
(3) All police use laser, for which there is no countermeasure. Also a few people went as far as to claim you can't even get direct-hit notification.
It's interesting to see what people thought about radar detectors, and I was surprised to see so many people with extremely negative impressions of it. It's also interesting to see the "urban legend effect" at work -- all of the 3 statements have some degree of truth, but have been exaggerated with each retelling.
I tried to step in and correct the most glaring misconceptions I saw but most people were absolutely unwilling to budge. Oh well, I guess it's good for us detector users that everyone thinks they don't work.
