Default 9500i review by “radar virgin”

This was my first radar ever.
During first week driving through Los Angles I ran into a dozen cops and radar never alerted. (It is not a cop finder).
Driving through city is very quite most of the time. I could drive on Ventura blvd from Sherman Oaks to Tarzana with 2 – 3 false (X band) alerts.
I had a trip to Mammoth Lakes (300 miles one way). I was very skeptical because I couldn’t get any credible threat in LA.
    This is the good part.
After about 80 miles I get passed by white SUV with V1 in the middle of his wind shield. (age and software version is unknown just keep that in mind). Large SUV with V1 going 85 is there a better rabbit? I am right behind.
On one of the down hills I get Laser alert next to a couple of buildings on the left side. I hit the breaks guy with V1 never hit the breaks. For a couple of minutes I keep 65 until I reach bottom of the hill false alarm. (I got same laser alert on the way back home at the same place). So I catch up with V1 again. At some point road splits and you do not see incoming traffic. I get Ka full blast. I hit breaks V1 doesn’t even slow down. Well on the opposite side LEO was writing a ticket to a poor guy and I got full blast when I was between two hills. After that guy with V1 exited at Rest Area. Driving nears small town I saw many cops all of them were identified by clean Ka.
On my way back I left late so most of the way I was driving at night. Many Ka alerts with a very nice ramp up than visual of LEO very nice range on a highway.(I cannot compare ramp up to any other RD this was my first RD).
About 50-80 miles before Lancaster I was passing 4-5 cars going about 75 and my speed was about 85 (just remember it was dark) there was about 10 feet left between me and last car in front I get LASER alert. I hit the breaks and match the speed of the other cars. In about 4-5 seconds cop on the right side parked sideways on connected road. It looks like he hit the car in front of me and WAS I LUCKY.

Before and after one of the towns there is a device that shows your speed with K alert. This is what I noticed on my way back. I was getting K alert for more than 2 miles facing the sign. And 0.8 miles forward facing and also about 0.8 miles going away from K hitting in my back.

Today I shipped RD back because I feel that I am more likely to get ticket speeding unnecessary.

Do not speed at night without rabbit. No radar will save you.

A friend of mine got ticket on the same trip with “Cobra” I do not know what kind. He said it showed cop in incoming direction he slowed down passed and speed up and cop was right behind.

Very nice review, the 9500I is certainly an awesome RD. Sounds similar to most people’s experiences.

WHAT??? You sent it back??? Your going to miss that thing the 1st time you get pulled over. :?

However, over confidence with a RD is just as bad as not having one at all.

    Drive safe.

I can't believe that balda2 shipped it back! A RD is no guarantee against a ticket, but with experience using one you learn several things:

-- How much and heavy traffic enforcement is on any given day.
-- You realize that with a RD you are far more alert and aware of your driving and of other motorists around you.
-- You realize that it is not a good idea to speed excessively and that you eventually will be caught if you do.
-- You realize how much fun radar detectors are for breaking the boredom on long road trips.
-- You learn where all of the local speed traps are along your daily commutes.
-- You learn which counties are particularly diligent at traffic enforcement and thus you always will remember to slow down when passing through those counties.
-- Most importantly and after a while of RD use, you learn to curb your excessive speeding habits and to leave a little bit earlier in order to make it to your destination on time without having to either speed or excessively speed. This, combined with your higher alertness when using a RD, makes you a much safer driver who is is more readily able to avoid potential accidents due to other unsafe drivers.

I'm sure that there are a few things which I failed to mention. But in the end, study after study has shown that drivers who use radar detectors are (as a group) much safer drivers compared to other drivers. Insurance companies know this yet they don't give us an additional break even if we have had a clean CT for years. Police know this too, but they campaign against radar detectors since wider RD use would cut into the revenue which they bring in from speeding citations.

Thats the way I see it in Mikey's World!

My use of the RD is not to be a victim of going with the flow of traffic and be part of the money making machine.

If his RD makes him want to speed, I can blame my condoms!

Thanks for the review and the input. It sounds like laser is starting to grow heavily in your area, and there are many options that can help you out if you are interested.

For the record I think I'm going to send mine back as well.

    Hi thestation,

I've always respected you opinions. Will you elaborate on why you are going to send back your 9500i?
