On my drive home the other day I was just about to pass a row of slow cars on a two lane highway. As soon as I started my pass, my V1 dutifully informed me of a K band radar from ahead. There was no known false on this highway, so I slowed down and didn't pass. A couple miles later I find they installed a new sign with a false K band emitter just to fool people.
Days pass, and I have to pass this same sign. 10 times per week I pass it, and my V1 would go off for miles and miles a day.
I had enough. It was snowing like crazy, and no one was within miles (country road). I pulled over and "fixed" the false K radar. Sign still functions great, but no more false K band! My drive is now silent again!
First police invent radar, then people invent radar detectors. Then police started using different radar bands to outwit speeders. Then speeders got updated radar detectors. Then DOT started putting up false radar sources to fool people into thinking there is a police operating radar nearby. Then good citizens take it on themselves to fix the problem of the deliberately false radar signals!
Here is my logic:
1 - When a driver hears an alert from their detector, and they are not expecting one, they logically assume there are police nearby.
2 - If a person is expecting to find a police officer nearby, they naturally scan the area trying to find out where they are hidden. (even if you are not speeding)
3 - If you are scanning the area looking for a cop, you are at the same time taking attention away from the road.
4 - If you take attention away from the road, you are more likely to have an accident
5 - Thus, false radar emitters make drivers with radar detectors more likely to have an accident.
Fixing the problem will make the roads a safer place to drive. Safety is Job 1!
