I am new to the radar detector world. I just bought my first one - an STi Driver. I am not a professional driver, although I do drive a lot in the West Michigan area, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, and everywhere in between!
First and foremost, did I make a smart decision by purchasing the STi? I just got it yesterday and ordered it on Tuesday from the manufacturer directly, so I have some time to return it if need be.
I have read a lot about bug fixes/firmware upgrades needed for the STi, since mine was just purchased, do I need to worry about that?
Right by my apt there is a Volvo/VW/Subaru/Chrysler/Hyundai dealer and every time I drive by during the day I get a K band alert, they do not have any automatic doors and there are no other automatic door sources around; also, if I drive by at night there is no alert, there are no officers in the vicinity. What could it be? I also get the same thing about 2 miles away from that location on the same road with no stores that have automatic doors. So I am a bit perplexed, the unit is in the AutoScan mode.
I first mounted the unit sitting on the dash right up against the windshield with the suction cups. I don't know if it was the detector or the defroster, but the unit got HOT! Almost too hot to hold! Is this normal? I then moved the about 3/4 of an inch up on the windshield so now it has air circulation all around it, but I haven't yet checked how hot it has gotten. What I want to know is what is the best place to mount it to detect radar and laser but also not worry about smash and grab punks? I live in an apartment and am a graduate student so I am on a college campus almost everyday. I don't want to have to keep removing it from the windshield, I guess I'm just too lazy.
Any other helpful pointers would be greatly appreciated! Also, is there a glossary of the abbreviations that you all use on this site somewhere? It gets hard keeping up with you guys sometimes.
