Default dashboard radar .vs installed radar

i know the comon differances like installed radar is hard to steal and that cops cant see them... but this there any performace differances, like range. comparing it to the 3 top of the line radar( x50, rx65, and v1)

Check out the Bel RX75 and the Escort SR7 compared to the V1, X50, or RX65. They may be more expensive but remote Radar detectors sacrifice range.

And I think they may suffer in range more than indicated by those tests. My roomate from last year had a V1, then gave it to his bro and had an SR7 put in his car. He said the V1 gave him much, much more warning, and the SR7 doesn't give him much warning at all. You would think not having to compete with glass they would do better, but I guess not.

My guess is because they are mounted so low to the ground

    I agree...
If the radar antenna is mounted lower to the ground, it has less line-of-sight with the targeting radar. If you do the math, it is possible that in a car you could be giving up over a mile of line-of-sight by mounting on the bumper vs dash/windshield mounting.
In Roy's test, it looks like he used a truck, and trucks generally sit up higher in the first place, so it wouldn't make as much of a difference as in a car, but definitely still significant...

After a lot of research and asking around many months ago, I decidced to purchase the ZR3, as opposed to more of a stealth model, based on the concerns above. I agree.

    Hi,

I did some testing on RDs. I compared different dashmount RDs with an Bel 966 (It's the european version of the 975) The results can be viewed here: ftp://gast:gast@jimmynet.serveftp.net

    Filename is LV21RWTest.mpg or LV21RWTest.wmv

All RDs were tested vs. a Multanova 6F Ka-Band. The antenna of the 966 (975) is mounted behind the front bumper of a '97 Mazda 626.

    Have fun watching....

That's the slowest server I've ever seen. I tried downloading the MPEG one but instead of my typical 600kb-1mb/sec I was getting 2kb/sec, and I couldn't get the wmv one to work.

If you send me the 3 mb one (or any one under 8mb), I'll host it on my website. Send it to me via www.yousendit.com
