Thread: Whats the best?

    Default Whats the best?

Radar or Laser (or both) I've never had/used one before but I'm looking for one best one I can. I'm looking in the price range of $200-$300. This summer I'll be driving across the midwest to the rockies (IN to MT), so I need detection for what they use along those roads.

In that price range I would consider a Bel V965, V995 or RX-65, or an Escort 8500 X50. If you are willing to push the price envelop just a bit, then I would highly recommend the Valentine V1 since it has the best front and rear laser detection of any radar detector, has excellent radar sensitivity, and since it is a RD which is designed for the kind of open road driving which you will be doing. I am a big Bel and Escort fan since their radar detectors meet the majority of people's driving needs for those who want a very good radar detector, but I also will recommend the V1 whenever anyone specifically asks for the best laser detection or if their driving is almost all interstate and rural driving.

Just remember that a radar detector is not a license to speed and that no radar detector will prevent you from getting a speeding ticket if you don't learn to use it wisely.

If most of your driving is going to be highway/rural, the V1 is top notch. its 100 bucks over your price range, but think of what a ticket costs too. Plus once you use the arrows on the highway, or get hit with multiple radar signals and want to know where they are, you will see that it was money well spent.

This video is a really good example of why the V1 is king of the highway.

V1 is king of rural areas hands down.

Spend an extra 100, you will not regret it.

That is definitely V1 territory up there, since there are very few falses because more cows live there than humans. But since your upper limit is $300, I also say X50. But understand this, if you encounter any laser traps, you are probably going to get a ticket, since laser detection is almost always too late to slow down and avoid a ticket. Even if you were to go above your stated limit and go with the V1 for it's excellent laser sensitivity, your odds might improve slightly, but you are probably still busted. The only true protection for laser is a laser jammer. Just so you know.

Yeah, those detectors are great. (Escort 8500 X50 red screen, Beltronics Vector 965 - 995, Beltronics RX65) Can't go wrong with any of them.

It is improtamt to note that Escort and Beltronics are brother companies (see Belscort) many of these share the same platform. The M4. So actual performance/range of the above detectors is very similar in mast cases. Like hockey005 said: "for unbiased testing look at www.guysoflidar.com" Here you can see the similar performance.

Focus on what functions you want/need, like ability to track multiple bogeys, frequency display, color (it matters when mounting low because of glare), and even try going to YouTube to listen to them. Sounds stupid, but you don't want to hate the sound of your new detector.

    Hope that helps
