Default Tried To Give Some RD Advice... I Shouldn't Have!

So I was at my bank this afternoon, and one of the tellers who knows me looks out the window at my car. She asks what type of radar detector that was in my windshield.

    "It's an Escort X50," I said.

She got this really smug look on her face and sneered. "Oh, those are worthless."

"Really?" I asked. "Who tells you so?"

Her wrinkled, hairy lips curdled up in what passed for a grin. "My son," she said proudly. "He knows everything about cars! He even installed my radar detector! It's a Rocky Mountain Radar that can block radar and detect laser! Can YOURS detect laser?"

This woman has always been smug and snooty. I tried to slowly break the news to her that RMR products are complete scams have been condemned by the Better Business Bureau. She didn't want to hear it.

"Well, first off, laser detection is useless, and RMR products have been shown not to work -"

"Yes they do!" she jumped in. "I know they do! It goes off and blocks their radar!"

"And what evidence do you have of this?"

"Well... it goes off! That means it works! And my son says it works, and he knows EVERYTHING about cars. E V E R Y T H I N G ! He even showed me the RIGHT way to mount it - STRAIGHT UP. And he told me the police mount radar guns on some stores like Target and Home Depot and he's right because it goes off whenever I get near one!" I thought her head was going to burst with snobbiness.

I was getting annoyed with this woman. I don't know how much her son knew about cars, but if he knew as much about cars as he did about radar detectors, he didn't know much. We all know that the hits she was experiencing when she was close to a store was their motion detectors and that pointing the detector straight up is just moronic. I'd love to punch whoever thought that idea up right in the mouth. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I shrugged. "Well, I guess if you're trying to pick up low-flying aircraft radar, I guess that's the best placement for it. Listen, I wish you luck with it, though. You'd be the first person to have an RMR product that works."

"You should call my son. He'll get you fixed up with a good radar detector."

Then, as I left, she offered a parting sentiment. "You should've gotten the V6 Mustang model. It much more modification potential. My son says so."

I rolled my eyes. "I'll be sure to trade it in as soon as possible."

This experience reminds me why I have mostly stopped trying to help people. Especially NJ chicks. 99.9% of them are snobby, self-righteous, ignorant, turn everything into a contest, most of them are getting fat, they SMOKE (yeah, I love kissing mouths that taste like crusty ashtrays), they get drunk and fall all over the place (real attractive), and all they care about is getting tan and what you can buy them. They're mouthy (oh wait, I meant "empowered"), and they think the world revolves around them. Selfish, jealous, and possessive. Ugh. I get sick thinking about it. I can't wait to get the hell out of this state.

Thank God my g/f lived in Virginia most of her life.

My '05 is great! I can't wait to make my modifications and I can't wait for the '07 Shelbys to come out... but I think I have the most fun with my '67 Shelby GT500.

Yeah, but even if she does get a ticket, she'd NEVER admit it.

Hey eater, where in NJ are you? I read some car magazine yesterday where they have an article on how to mod an '05 mustang GT to beat out an 07 cobra while saving 1000's. I'll post what magazine it is tomorrow since I saw it at the train station.

The sad part is that the RMR crowd already has the list of excuses made up as to why someone gets a ticket with an RMR product... It's like dealing with an alcoholic as they live in denial.

I was working with a guy a number of years ago that had an RMR jammer. I didn't know at the time that they didn't work and I was asking him all sorts of questions about it and was considering buying one until a few days later we were driving to lunch. We drove by one of those police speed signs and it picked up his cars speed with no problem. I asked him about it and I got the same old line about not being police radar, doesn't do sampling so it will get a reading, but a "real" police radar would not. Well I went looking for more info and found enough stuff to make me question if the product really works at all. Of course this guy lived in denial as I started to point out the things I had found. He finally decided to just say "All I know is that I haven't gotten a ticket and I know that it works".

It wasn't until I saw some of the testing here done by individuals with the RMR that I finally had confirmation that the RMR stuff is junk. Most people don't know about this site or the great tests done by individuals so you really cannot blame them for not knowing. A lot of people don't take the time to research things or bother to find out anything for themselves. That lady is going on good faith that her son has done the homework for her and she believes it... It really is kinda sad that so many folks are allowed to get scammed like this and nobody is doing anything about it.

    Drive safe, have fun,

Well if she is a big speeder than she will probably get busted soon using that piece of crap. BTW, her remark about your car is just completely stupid, if your sig is right, you have an 05 GT mustang? That is the best model you can get. Who the hell wants a v6 mustang representing the true muscle car? I would take the v8 anyday. I would of said, does the v6 have as much power as mine, does the v6 have foglights? Does the v6 have improved suspension, does the v6 have the muscle car feeling? The only remark she can reply with is, well it gets better gas mileage, and breaking news lady!! people who drive muscle cars dont care about gas mileage! But totally sweet ride dude, the 05 v8 mustang is really a nice ride.
