    Default another mounting question...

Ok, I got tired of screwing with suction cups b/c they make the windshield dirty and I'm tired of rejuvenating the damn suction cups. SO.. I finally went to Wallyworld and picked up velcro and slapped my RD on top of my dash above my speedometer. Will this affect the range significantly? Pics below.

Probably not much of a difference, (compared to mounting low on the windshield) except maybe in laser. I used to have a set-up in my Talon, except it was a bit higher (my dash was raised higher over the windshield wipers by just a bit I think) but I had no problems. Again I would say laser would be an issue possibly.

It can be different in every car...

The best thing to do: try to find a K band speed sign, and test it.

    ABSOLUTELLY!!!

Last year, down in the States, for a while I ran my STI in its usual place by the sun visor and my other RD, the Escort S2 hooked up to the cig lighter and mounted low just above the windshield wipers, with suction cups, always the STI was waaaaaaaaay ahead of the S2 in all alerts, K and Ka radar, and no difference (both in the very same time) for the laser ones... try to mount it anywhere around the RVM including up by the visor with

Thats because the S2 sucks, and the STi kicks a$$ @ radar detection?

I'd bet if you switched the mounting positions of those 2 detectors mate, the STi still would have killed it (the S2).

Your X50 in that position will perform with the raw sensitivity of the RD itself. It will perform better with regards to laser since it is mounted so low and has a much better chance of "seeing" the laser cone aimed at your front license plate or headlights.

With regards to radar sensitivity, mounting roughly mid windshield is the ideal location since this allows the RD to also better pick up hood reflections off of the average vehicle hood. Yet this very slight increase in sensitivity due to the extra hood reflections usually results in a net sensitivity gain of only about 2dBm. To get the theoretical maximum 3dBm gain your RD would have to have a downward flared RD horn and would have to be optimally mounted height-wise on your windshield based on the specific shapes and contours of your vehicle's hood.

The only advantage of mounting "high" either next to or above your RVM is that the RD will have a better view of the road ahead. Yet the "high" position, for most vehicle hoods, usually results in a net sensitivity gain of just 1dBm or so.

All of the above is based on my 25+ years of experience in testing dozens of radar detectors in either my cars or in friend's cars.

Presently I have my radar detectors mounted above my RVM by using 3M's superlock VHB fasteners. I totally discarded the suction cups and instead attached the RD mounting brackets using the 3M stuff. Simply ask if you want photos of my setup!

I like the "high" mounting position since it gives my RDs a higher up and hopefully clearer view of the road ahead and since its well known that only the V1 is superb at detecting laser.

So, short and sweet for what its worth!

Yeah, that and they would both interfere with each other I believe.

Yeah I was kinda wondering why the comparison between an S2 and a sti was made lol

I want to see them, I am pretty sure I have seen them before, can you either PM me with pics, post them here, or possibly if you did post them in the past... simply tell me what the name of the topic was.

ALSO, I went with this mount because I don't have a hardwiring kit yet. I hate that cord dangling in my view. I had it mounted high for a while, then just couldn't take it anymore due to the cord. Oh yeah, the velcro I'm using is 3m double-sided stuff. Is that what you are talking about MEM-TEK?
