You guys kno those signs they use to tell u your speed....well the ones around here have k band..i noticed while using my x50 i didnt get that much range when i found one...do they have a weaker signal than a actual cop radar?
thanks

Sometimes they are full power and sometimes their signals are really weak, The one you seen was a low power one for sure, its totaly normal  .
oh ok thanks...i mean it caught it a lil ways back and as i went by it i got full signal strength but it dodnt seem like i had too much distance
Low power radars on speed signs are common, they dont give you warning from really far. You caught it from how far?
there was one part of a road straight,,,,i only cauight it on the straight part...not before it where it was curvy..prolly not even a half mile away
By using a lower power setting on a radar sign you greatly increase the chance of the closest vehicle to the sign producing the reading the driver sees.
A half mile would be normal for that kind of curvy road setup with low power. Low power radar cant be picked up a lot from curves.
I'm pretty sure that the signal power level on a radar unit is fixed. I can't reproduce the explanation that I read but it was basically a matter of the transmitters not being able to produce a different signal strength without the freqency drifting. When you change the range on a radar unit it does nothing to the power, but rather looks for stronger return signals so that only close-in vehicles are clocked.
That said, there is nothing stopping them from manufacturing a unit that uses less power so that it can operate on solar cells and a battery. Maybe that's why these trailers are harder to detect early.
They could be lower power, if they were specifically manufactured that way. There's probably some out there like that, but the ones I see use antennas from regular radar units I believe...
I havent seen one of these signs around here in a loooong time. Guess what? There was one on my way home today and that sucker was powered up. I did detect it from a good ways, didnt look at mileage of the 1st alert so didnt worry about it. Ill check it out tomorrow on my way back from work.
