I am in Pittsburgh for the ASEE conference and I had a rental minivan. There were TWO cigarette plugs in close reach to the windshield and it just SCREAMED "bring two detectors" to me!
So, I brought my X50 and V1 along for the trip. My general observations were:
(1) On Ka band the two units seemed neck-in-neck, except a 35.5 encounter to the rear where the 8500 X50 failed to alert until the officer creeped within view.
(2) On X and K band the V1 sniffed out weak signals from almost TWICE the distance, consistently. However, both detectors gave adequate detection distance.
(3) The 8500 X50 tended to be extremely quiet and only screamed when there was an issue. Even the rest of my family who aren't into detectors knew after the first few encounters "if the blue one beeps, slow down"
(4) The arrows on the V1 were absolutely vital! I could not have survived the trip without it!
And yeah, I was a bad person and ran both detectors together.... I wanted both the arrows of the V1 and the easy-to-interpret ramp-up of the X50. For this reason, I mostly discount the comparative performance measurements from above...
Overall, I am extremely satisfied by the detection performance of both detectors. They both are top-class units with top-notch performance, but each has its own special features that makes it unique and worthwhile.
For the rest of this trip, in the city I am gonna run the X50 for peacefulness and in the highway, I will run them both together.
