Default what gives escort or bel rd to show self cal messages

i was just wondering, because i was reading reviews from circuit city and best buy, where people are satasife with there detector for a month or so, and then after that it shows self cal. so i was thinkng what makes the detector do give out self cal messages.

When the detector starts up, it goes through a series of tests that if one fails, it'll throw a self cal or service required screen. Lets say that the detector is way out of tune. That is one thing that'll cause it to throw a self cal screen.

As said above, its a test to make sure the detector is in tune and working properly. If it displays 'Self-Cal' it means it is calibrating itself, and its not an extremely bad thing to be honest. (Many users on here have experienced that after some time (a year or two), and then found their units to be working flawlessly after a single self-cal.) Basically the RD is 'fixing' itself in a sense.

The problem comes with multiple self-cals or a Service required message. Normally multiple self-cals would IMO be cause to send the unit in. The Service required is just that... the unit upon start up failed a given test, and could not 'repair' the problem itself and instead... well... service is required of the unit (It needs to be sent back to Belscort.)

Its a very neat feature that VR (after lagging behind for a good amount of time on this issue) even adapted to their newer V1's... it is (IMO) a HUGE Achilles-heel (for older units)... many people don't wish to pay for the upgrade though, and like certain aspects about the older units.

One day, my sister left her V940 on and up on the windshield at home. I walk by, notice up, and open the door. I forget if it was a rapid or slow chirp, but it was saying Service Required on the screen. I tried to take it off, and burnt my finger on the number on top. Tried again, this time being more careful, took it down, and disconnected it. I brought it inside, and left it there overnight. Next morning, I took it out, and hooked it up. It started right up, and acted normal. I reset it just in case, but it hasn't done it again.

I'm going to take a guess that in that particular case, severe overheating was the reason for it's Service Required message.

I had one self-cal message on my SRX about two months after I installed it, then never again. I agree with what AirMoore says above, frequent and/or multiple self-cal errors are cause for concern, but one is no big deal.
