Default Ku band in Puerto Rico

If you visit Puerto Rico, i hope you do, be aware that a few police cars have Ku radar guns.

I really doubt it; Ku band isnít available in the USA. To my understanding there are no Ku bands guns available for sale in the US. They should be available in 2006. Please note that all legal RF emitting devices in PR should be approved by the FCC. To my knowledge there is no FCC approved Ku radar gun available. I have only detected K band and a lot of Ka activity. I have a RX65 (Ku band capable) and have the Ku band off. I will not turn it on until Ku band radar is available for sale in the US. Where did you get this information? Did you detect it? In what area? Who use it? Is it the highway troopers ďautopistasĒ or the transit cops ďtransitoĒ? In what area they are operating?

Also, note that to my knowledge the Puerto Rican police do not use (Iím pretty sure they donít have it neither) LIDAR (Laser). And the majority of LEOs with radar use it in constant mode. Very few LEOs use instant-on (Thank god for that).

They are using it; I detected the Ku band with my RX65 when I was driving by Cayey last week. I turned around to see where the threat was and I noticed a brand new highway trooper car running slowly (in the other direction) as if it where tracking someone (a car). The FCC approved the use of Ku band for the USA (including PR of course) almost 10 years ago. Maybe they where trying out this relatively new technology; remember that a lot of people on the island have radar detectors but few of them detect Ku band...the goverment needs to collect more money, guess how it can be done !!

I understand, I know Ku band is approved for use. But no body is selling Ku band guns in the US. If some manufacturer were to make a gun for the US they have to test it (so it doesnít cause interference) and get the approval of the FCC (also they should get an FCC id for the device). My point is that is there is no gun available for sale no gun should be in operation in the US (at least legally). My bet is that even if you saw a LEO it probably was a false from other type of radar. To my knowledge there are several radars (including NOAA NextRad Doppler radar) working in the area. Also there is a lot of cellular, communications, radio and TV relay towers (because of the altitude) working in that area. One question, did the signal you received become intense as you approach the LEO and then faded away or you received a sudden and constant signal? (I have heard in this site that a lot of people are detecting Ku band around airports {were weather and air control, ground control radars are in operation})

It is good to see that there are people in PR that are informed users of Radar/LIDAR detectors. More than Ku band my preoccupation is Laser. Even though I havenít experience a laser encounter I know itís only a matter of time for one. Again this is because Laser guns have been available in the market for a long time. When that happens, then we will have to install Blinders or Lidatek.

I usually drive in the north area (from Hatillo to San Juan). I have seen a lot of Ka (no falses) activity and like 3-4 K band encounters (1 false K band). I have the following bands deactivated (SWS, POP and Ku). I have a RX65 rev. 4.5. What is your experience in you area of operation? I suppose that you are seeing a lot of Ka activity. I would like to have the X50 because of the tech display (shows if you are receiving more that on signal in one band). This is because I have seen a lot of highway troopers with dual Ka guns.

Thank you for the information. Please keep us posted of any rare encounter you get. I will enable Ku band for one or two weeks to see if I can get a Ku signal from a LEO. Iíll let you know (will post) what I find. Again thank you very much.

If they will operate anything like the failed Chinese products that I have had to take apart and fix recently then more power to them! The only good radar unit is one that comes from the factory with stripped screws and cracked solder connections. I'm not just blowing hot air, I really ought to post some pictures in the Back Alley of my current Chinese fiasco.

This post discuses Ku band falses. People have receive Ku band signals when police cars are in sight but you can be sure that there is a 99.9% probability that it is a false because as I have mentioned before Ku band guns are not available for sale in the US (but the band is authorizes for use, as Burrito mentioned. The target date for their introduction is on 2006). Please see Sethy's last post: http://www.radardetector.net/KU-fals...RX65-2623t.php Thanks!

the low quality of certain products is probably due to low costs which can be achieved within communist areas. this is an economical issue,,
