Default Need advise from the experts

Hi I a newbie here and in the market for a new detector. I've been reading quite a bit about the different detectors available as well as any review I can find. I have narrowed down my choice to either the Escort X50 or the Valentine 1. I have concerns regarding both and some questions that I hope the veterns of this board can answer. Her goes.

    X50
    1. Is the X50 upgradeable? Can't find any reference to this option available on Escorts site. If so, how much do they charge.

    Valentine 1.
    2. I know the V1 is upgradeable. Question for those who've had them for sometime is, how often does the company typically provide new updates? Every month, 2 months, 6 months, etc. Just curious as I've read there are issues with current version.

    3. One of the big selling points on the X50 is the Auto-mute. Does this option work on the V1? I've heard that it does and it doesn't. Would like to get feedback from this crowd. I know the V1 is prone to false more but I could live with it if the Auto-mute worked properly.

    4. Is Valentine 1 only available direct? What are folks thoughts on used one from ebay?

Any info would be greatly apprecitated.

    Thanks

    1) Not really upgradable

    V1
    2) The software changes as problems arise and are brought to the attention of Valentine. Probably software might change 2-4 times a year and hard ware changes maybe every 1-2years (ALL JUST ESTIMATIONS BE MYSELF)

    3) Valentine's Auto-mute works the opposite way as escorts..... Escort quiets it's alerts after about 3-4seconds at full volume...Valentine will not alert until K-band gets stronger than 2 lights and stay at full volume till thew alert is over

    4) Valentine only offer's warranty's from the units from them directly....You can get a new Valentine that some one returned for around $360, 40 less than full price..but you do have to wait

    Spoiler: show

If a new radar band like KU comes to the US...you would return the unit and escort will add it on. If you do go with the X50 then definitely get the extra 2 year warranty for $30. Because then you have a 3 year warranty and then if something happens to it or some new threat comes out ...you just pay $5 to ship it and the rest is covered. 8)

If I was going to buy a radar detector today, I would only consider the V1 or the RX65. I think these two are the best. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think the RX65 is out for me as I can't stand the sounds chosen for their alerts. I think it looks like I am getting the V1. It's been a few years since I've had a RD; I basically stopped since I had to keep upgrading each year or so due to new technologies and/or improvements. I got tired of throwing my money away each time. Looks like the V1 is the choice due to the future proof nature of it, only wish it was a little cheaper. I will probably pick up a returned unit.

    Thanks all for your help.

I have only felt compelled to do upgrades to my V1 about every other year or so as new technology becomes sorted out. That has been more than enough to keep me as up to date as I felt I needed to be. Not only has the V1 been upgradeable, but they have managed to stay on top of the latest technology pretty well. The X50 appears to be behind in that regard and a very poor record on the upgrades... I would second stealthJamal's recommendations on the RX65 or the V1. The V1 is the clear technology leader, and best of breed at this point in time.

    Yes, it is SOFTWARE upgradeable.
    It is not HARDWARE upgradeable

Under warranty the upgrade is free. Outside of warranty they cite a $29.95 charge

this has been discussed regarding updates...and we all know they will NOT do it...

V1 is ugly but has good all round performance...X50 is pleasing on the eye but hard to update
