    Default Another RD Noob

Well to start off I'm from Maine and I spend some time out in Washington State. I went a fairly cheap RD (sub $300 range). It doesn't have to be perfect, as I have read that the real good RDs are over $1000.
Would I be able to get away with an even cheaper RD? Like in the $<100 area?

The cheaper the radar detector, the better chance you are going to get a ticket.

Just wait a few months and save up the extra money for a top of the line Escort or Valentine 1.

Best in the 200$ in my opinion is Whistler Pro 78, XTR 690 and the newest 695. If you want more try Bel,Escort or V1. My Pro 78 has saved me over 100+ times from K and Ka mostly. Over 3 years i have been ticket free from Whistler products. For laser you need to save for a Laser Interceptor or a Blinder. Whistler is #1 in Customer service by far and has a unique patent that has one of the fastest response times detecting radar. As for Rejecting Cobra detector falses go with
Whistler and program FILTER 2 in it is very quiet on road trips.

Having owned Whistler products in the past I can say they are certainly a very descent product. Stay with the new line-up though (Pro-78 or XTR-695.) If you want to spend less than $200 my suggestions are in order....

    1. Bel Vector 955

    2. Whistler XTR-695

    3. Whistler Pro-78

These RD are going to give you adaquete protection without hurting the wallet too much. I can tell you that I have owned some of the more expensive and some would consider the best RD out there. And yes performance is MUCH, MUCH higher. Especially in Early Warning long range detection. If you can spend $300+ dollars, for just a tad bit over buy a Passport 8500 X50.

I got one on that 'e' site and got the latest version as well and paid a little over $222.00 shipped. Some have reported BBuy having the latest version Rev 6.3 in stock as well. There is always radarbusters.com. They are an authorized Escort/Passport dealer.

My sugguestion: Escort Passport 8500 X50 Red Rev. 6.3

As long as you stay with Whistler, Bel, Escort or V1, you get what you pay for, in my opinion. As you move down in price, you move down in performance and features, in my opinion.

Well all of Maine could be called rural, and I live in Yarmouth, a town of about 8000.
I've bolded the towns near me/that I pass through:

Well I'm not sure how to program it, but I'll figure it out if I buy it . I have heard so many bad things about Cobra, I'm staying away from their products. Big thanks to you!

Big thanks to you too! I had an 8500 X50 tab open but it was $310. I found one off google for $220 (BIN on eBay though ). I may check on some auctions for an X50 too.
I found a pro-78 for $130, an Xtr-695 for $145, a Vector 955 (demo/display model) for $90 or new for $140. Given these prices and the "modes of detection" I posted [way] above, what is my best option?

I'd still say your XTR-695 or Pro-78 is your best option -- best combination of detection performance (particularly to instant-on), good price, and great customer service.

Since there is laser listed for your area, understand that a RD is not proper protection from laser threats. Only a laser jammer can properly protect you from laser and you will not get one on this budget.

So there is no way of detecting the laser threats? Only ways of jamming them?
