Default Intersting radar info...need some help too

Hey guys...well today i was driving on this hilly road with a lot of trees...i was approaching a cop who was shooting what seemed to be instant on Ka....anyways i noticed i had little range when compared to the constant on K. Also i kno he had duel headers or soemthing because as i went the other way back i didnt get a signal on my detector until i passed him then full ka all the way back...anyone know why im not getting that much range? is it because of the hill/trees...id say i wasnt even getting .5 of a mile...please let me kno i have the x50

Ka guns have a narrower beam than K guns, and is more easily blocked by obstacles, so the detection range drops more over hills and curves than K does. Some guns have a low power setting as well, that reduces the detection range (as well as its range in clocking traffic, so it works both ways).

Also, if he was using instant on, you wouldn't pick anything up at all until the LEO triggers the radar when he sees a car coming.

Do you know of any specific models that have this "low power setting"? I have checked around a bit, and I haven't found any so far that can actually reduce their power output. But if these do exist I would like to know about it.

Most have a range control, but that only reduces receive sensitivity so that only closer targets are displayed.

Gunnplexers have fixed power, the only way they could make a gun like that would be to implement an attenuator between the oscillator and antenna.

I could be wrong about the power setting...I've heard of "low power Ka" for example, and thought it was a mode. Maybe it's just lower but fixed power output on some guns.

I had a Ka hit in Illinois last week for at least 3 miles, no hills, but some curves, until I came upon the LEO. I was surprised at the range.

I think hills are the biggest enemy to long range detection. In a relatively flat area, you can get detection at 2-3 miles with a decent detector.

I picked up a statey's Ka instant on from 2 or so miles away with my X50 last weekend.

Based on my testing with a Stalker Dual, I would agree. I did some testing with a certified LEO and he turned the range control to maximum and minimum and several settings in between. It had no effect on the range at which I could pick up the Stalker with a V1 or BEL 985. And he reported that changing the settings had little effect on the range at which he could get a reading on my car. I forgot to ask him if it had an effect on the doppler audio. Could it be that changing the setting to minimum, it will not report doppler audio until the targets are closer?

Yes that is definitely possible. Remember that, due to the higher frequency, Ka band is harder to detect around curves and over hills.
