Had an interesting experience today on the way home from a local restaurant with a friend of mine.
Driving down a major road around midnight (very little traffic) I pass by a stoplight and see a fully marked LEO waiting to turn left into my direction of travel. Naturally I slow to PSL and set the cruise. A few seconds later I see him coming up on me like a bat out of hell until he slows down and keeps just about even with my quarter panel. He fires up his Ka band radar gun and I get about 4-5 bars on the X50. I immediately hit the dim button to put it in full dark mode. He keeps Ka'ing me and slows down a little (presumably to get an actual speed reading) and I have to get in the left lane so I pull in front of him (3 seconds of blinker and a smooth transition if I do say so myself!).
A couple of seconds later he turns his headlights off and then turns them back on. I hit the brakes and slow down to about ten under PSL and pull to the right (again with blinker and smooth movement). He gets behind me and lights me up. Having been pulled over several times I go through my usual routine of engine off, interior lights on, keys on dashboard, and hands on the wheel. Cop comes up and informs me that my license plate light was off. Quick hit on the bumper with my fist and it turned on, and he let me off with a warning.
I can't help but be paranoid and think he only gave my car the fifth degree because he saw my X50. Anyone else have any experiences like this where a detector may have only worsened the situation?
