    Default Good beginning radar detector?

I've been interested in radar detectors and their technology since I got my permit. Right now I have a crappy cobra ESD 7000 and am unsure what I should get for a REAL detector. I'm 17 and don't have a job so I don't have a very high budget. I heard the Whistler Pro 78 is the cheapest quality detector you're gonna get but I was wondering if anybody had any recommendations that are possibly cheaper that they have found to work. Thank you!

I personally prefer the Bel V955 over the Whistler for that price range, but they are pretty close. And please run over the Cobra ESD 7000. That makes real RDs false alert like crazy!

listen to DJ on this one.
Consider an Escort 8500 X50 for a first detector.
    I think its ideal.

The ESD7000 isn't even heavy enough to serve as a good paperweight. It does make a fairly good door stop though.

You do not need an X50 for a first real detector. Since he is on a budget even a Bel 940 will be ideal, even if there is no X in your area put it in City LoX and you will be fine in areas that X is bothersome.

    X2

The only benefit of a X50 over the Bel vectors is features. If you're on a budget, the 940/955 will serve you well.

I wanted to buy my 1st detector recently too. A friend sent me here to keep me from buying a Cobra and lent me his Bel V940 for a few weeks. I am soooooo glad he stopped me from making that mistake. I bought a V955. I love it. I'm still lurking and learning here but mine is working good enuf for me that I dont see myself moving to a expensive one any time soon.
We do have X here so i need it on my toy.
