Hey, for anybody who is looking for a new RD i'm going to make this guide for newbies. Before you post a thread asking what we suggest read over this. Thanks
First their are many different variations of radar detectors. Many different companys and almost all radar detectors are different and suited for a specific person. No one RD will be perfect for another person. Many things we need to know before we can give you an accurate pick. Read along..
Here are some common Acronyms that are used on the forum:
RD: Radar Detector
LJ: Laser Jammer
LE: Law Enforcement
LEO: Law Enforcement Officer
Belscort: The reason people will say this and not Beltronics or Escort is that Escort bought Beltronics and they are in essence the same company. Some of their detectors use the same platform and both borrow eachothers patents.
CES: Consumer Electronics Show
TSP: Ticket Saving Performance - Regarding mostly Laser Jammers
LI: Laser Interceptor - Major Laser Jammer Company
ZR4: Reffering to Escorts Shifting Laser Jammer System
TS: TruSpeed, new low cost Laser gun that is has many new technology's incorporated in to the system. Also has a new pulse rate not seen before.
GOL: Guys Of Lidar - Native Testing group that are regarded as non-biased and test extensively. One of the most respected testing groups also. Site is: guysoflidar.com
RR: RadarRoy member and founder of Radardetector.net
RD.net: This site, radardetector.net
RB: Radarbusters - Seller of many countermeasure products. Site: radarbusters.com
JTG: Jam to Gun - This is a term that reffers to a Laser Jammer doing the best it can do by jamming the Laser Gun 100%.
JFG: Jam from Gun - This is a term that reffers to a Laser Jammer doing the best it possibly can by jamming a Laser Gun 100% but instead of a front shot which JTG is, he is shooting your car in the rear, and is regarded as the most difficult thing a Laser Jammer (LJ) has to deal with.
PT: Punch-Through - This is in regard to a Laser Gun getting a speed reading even though you have a Laser Jammer on your vehicle.
Lidar: Reffering to Laser Guns, Lidar is the parent term for police using this technology. Like Radar, but it uses Laser so it is called Lidar.
RS: Radio Shack
Many more Im sure, please phone in if I missed one.
Looking for a RD, but not sure which one to get: Read this first
Here you will find the things we need to know in order to find the right radar detector for *you*!
Please post the answer to these in your thread:
1.) Your budget: If I had to suggest a minimum budget for anybody it would be $300 but in this industry you get what you pay for and it will be worth it if you are willing to spend 350-500. If you wanting the best of the best expect to pay 1000+.
2.) Where/What type of area do you live in: If you willing to post your city/state it is helpful as theirs a probability that at least one member knows where your talking about as well as what types of radar guns are used, very important to the decision and the type of area (Just put this if your not willing to post your city/state). This is going to be either City, City/Urban, Urban, Sub-Urban, Urban/Rural, or Rural. This is imporant in the decision.
3.) Your Drive Style: What is the typical speed you go over, and this could be different variations on different types of roads. Or what speed would you like to go over the speed limit. Important as well.
4.) What percentage of driving do you do. This will consist of a percentage of Highway(typical highway doesn't mean interstate) and City/Urban Driving. I do around 40% Highway, 35% Urban/City, and 25% Rural, mostly back roads. Important as well
5.) Type of car you drive, and this is not that important in terms of radar but if your looking into a laser jammer its very imporant.
Also if your new to Radar Detectors, RD's are not Police car detectors, they will detect when a LEO is running radar. Also most states use laser and don't think your RD will save you against that as its not radar its a beam of Infared Light and though detectors can have laser detection by the time your detector goes off, the leo already has your speed.
Also, Cobras are crap. Period Please don't get one of these, if you want to waste 100 dollars to get a speeding ticket only to have your detector alert when the cop already has your speed, go for it otherwise please don't.
