    Question Question: LEO's with Customers

So, just got back from visiting my girlfriend tonigh and had a question. On the way home I passed three different LEO's, all pulled over with customers. My V1 never made a peep. Got me thinking, when an LEO has someone pulled over, is there a standard procedure to turn off their radar or does it vary?

The LEO's in question were AL State Troopers who I know use Ka units. Do they lock in someones speed and turn off actively shooting radar? If it was I/O, does the officer shoot, then turn it off? Just curious as to why I have had no detection.

I think it's an incidental thing. Maybe they'll leave it off or maybe they'll leave it on depending on what they were doing before initiating the stop. It's not like the radar gun is beeping the whole time.

Some Troopers clearly leave it on to alert drivers they are there. So in fact an RD can be used for safety purposes. Like when my local PD runs radar constant on in school zones.

When you lock in a speed, the radar stops shooting. Therefore, troopers with customers will usually not be shooting.

My local PD. They sit completely obvious in a turn lane with C/O Ka. When I drive by I see the LEO reading some kind of book. He accomplished his goal of getting people to slow down without writing a ticket. +1 to that LEO in my book.

I call this set up "Broadcast radar" meaning the LEO is looking to be as visible as possible to motorist. I think it's a good tactic, and beneficial to everyone. Even Cobra users.

Some of our LEO's actually drive out to the middle of a major roadway and park a cruiser, then hitch a ride back with another officer. You can see the unmanned car a long ways off, and people slow down like crazy. Great tactic. Thanks Stealth Stalker, thats the answer I wanted to hear.

I find this happens a lot, quite frankly I prefer it when they leave it on for the "broadcast mode" but that doesn't happen that often.

Most units I've played with keep transmitting with a speed locked in. In fact, most units that have a separate "locked" window do so to allow the operator to continue to track the target in the "target" window after a speed is locked in. It allows the operator to obtain a better tracking history.

Usually hand-helds that only have a single trigger will stop transmitting when the target is locked in, particularly if they only have a single speed window. Otherwise, they too will keep transmitting after a speed is locked in, usually requiring a second pull of the trigger to actually put the radar in standby.

However, it is worth mentioning that most courts do not require an officer to lock in a speed, simply observing the reading is sufficient. A more likely explanation as to why the radar is not running is because they were using I/O and only triggered it long enough to obtain a speed.

A lot of times it depends on how the radar is being used. If constant on, they will usually leave it on while serving a customer. If instant on, or something other than radar used for the pull-over, it'll be off (standby) while serving a customer.

It also depends on the radar unit being used, for instant-on. If the LEO has to toggle a switch to go from standby to transmit and back, they may flip it back to standby or just keep transmitting (e.g. on the K-55). They can lock in a speed while transmitting. If the unit being used has a momentary button (or trigger grip) to transmit in I/O mode, he releases the button, it stops transmitting.
