    Default Radar Antenna outside car

Why is it when I travel through mainly VA, NC, PA, Maryland most all the state troopers have there radar antenna hanging outside the car backwindows?

Most all others have them on the dash front and rear?

Not sure about other departments or states but until recently, VSP policy prevented using a radar inside the police vehicle due to the possibility of interference from the heater/ac fan. That policy has changed but older vehicles were not retrofitted with the new brackets for inside mount and therefore still use the window mounts. All new vehicles issued to the troopers have the inside mounts installed prior to issue. I would say that if the cruisers you have seen with outsde mounted radars are VSP, then they are older vehicles.

Ahh, maybe that explains it. I have seen the same thing in MA, with the antenna up and away from the vehicle on a pylon. I always figured it was so that they could "see" over the divider.

when traveling through PA, myself and The Veil Guy stopped at a rest area where he met up with a LEO who was very nice and asked him a few questions. I belive if I remember correctly he said something along the lines they can park the car on the shoulder with tree's behind them. That way the car is not visible at all and just the radar sticks out!

They do it around bends on the highway.

Without a detector, They've got your speed before you've even thought about the brakes.

Back in the days of the K-55 radar system, it was causing headaches for some officers if the antenna was mounted within the vehicle.

Worse than just headaches. It was killing people.
