Default Can I use a telephone wire to extend the wire?

Just wondering, If I can use a regular telephone wire as an extension for my Escort X50??
Will it be possible for the wire to take the load of the power from the 12V outlet in the car??
    Any experts care to chip-in.

Yes it works.. Its how I have my RD hardwired. Don't go too long on the wire or the voltage drop may be too significant for the RD to work correctly. I currently have a 7ft cord extension which works but when I tested it with a longer one (15?) it didn't work.

I use a 10 or 12ft phone cord (if I remember correctly). Everything works just fine.

Wire has negligible resistance, so as long as the length only has 2 digits, you should be fine. If not, you probably need to rethink the design, rather then get a longer wire..lol.

When I first hardwired my Tribute, I cut the phone cord to the exact length I needed.

Then I wanted to move the detector and needed more length.

First I tried using a coupler and a 12 foot phone cord in addition to whatever length I had - probably 10-11 feet. If I left the detector on when I started the engine, it would read "Low Volt" for 5 or 6 seconds instead of the 1/4 second it usually took. Also, when the engine was off, if I turned the headlights on it would sometimes read "Low Volt." I never put the multimeter on it to see exactly what was going on, but cutting the original cord and crimping a new plug on fixed that issue.

Just keep it as short as practical and it should be fine...

I make all my own cords for my detectors, all cars are hardwired. If I'm lucky I can color match it to the vehicle's interior which makes it a bit less obvious.

I'm not a big fan of the RJ-11, but if that's what we're forced to work with, so be it. There are some variations in these connectors, I'm not sure why. Some RJ11 connectors are narrower than others. For example, the cord I made for my daily driver won't work with my V940...it's too wide and I can't plug it in. It works just fine on the V1, though. There's some slight variation in width and I haven't been able to identify it through the part number.

You can purchase either 2-conductor or 4-conductor wire (Home Depot, Lowes, Radio Shack, etc) and find either two-conductor or 4-conductor RJ 11 connectors. I think I purchased my crimping tool at Home Depot...it wasn't a lot. The tool is very easy to use, it has a built-in stripper. You just have to mind your polarity and that's about the only concern.
