    Default Decision time

ok, so it's is time for me to make my decision on what detector to give me dad. First all let me tell you he drives about 70% city and 30% highway. When he drives on the highway he does speed 10-15 over. In MI LEO's use k and ka band mostly. Yes there is laser and such but I am not buying him a jammer. Also, they are very good with the I/O usage here.

Next, he is the type of person that sets it and forgets it. He is not very technologically advanced, he does not even switch his current pro 58 from city to highway if he gets on the highway and once I saved him from an I/O encounter because of that (if you want to know how, just ask). So I would be the one to set it up for him and he will leave it that way. I want a detector that will offer him the best chance at not getting caught and still be fairly quiet on the streets.

So vote in the poll and if anyone has any comments/questions just ask.

Sounds like only one option for him -- an Escort 9500ix. Its likely what I will get for my dad as well since both our dads sound like they have the same driving habits and don't understand electronics very well.

hey he only gets what I can afford at this time, he will not buy one for himself so right now there are only two choices. Both are an upgrade for him so he can't complain.

I can only comment on the 955 because I've never tried a whistler. 955 is great!

Well I have a Bel V940 and its ok. I dont like that I cant turn off X band and its kinda noisey. Isnt the Bell V955 a step above the 940 with a few extra bells and whisles.

Oh, in that case, the 695. Its quieter around town, and you can set the display colors based on the band of the alert. For my dad the choice comes down to either the 695 or the 9500ix. I would like to get my dad the 9500ix, but I too can't afford to get him this at the present time. My dad might end up with a XTR-695 because if its like my Pro78 then I know that it will be pretty quiet around town. Yet I really would like to get him a 9500ix.

I would go with the 955. I have had several freinds, relatives and aquaintances with the noob dilema of what RD to get. Most have ended up buying a 955 and all that have are very happy with them. Of course we do have X band here so turning it off isnt an option we would use. You know your Pop's area and driving style so as an experienced RD user you really are quite qualified to make the call.

the only thing I am afraid of is, if I give him the 955, it might miss an I/O encounter and he would be boned. From the GOL testing it seemed that the 955 can miss I/O encounters.

Don't forget that Bel/Escort has been quietly adding new filtering algorithms to the firmware in their RDs. Fairly recently produced products should be able to consistently see I/O bursts as short as 1/2 second now.
