Default Laser hit at toll plaza

I went through a couple of toll plazas last night and got a very brief (maybe 0.5 seconds) laser hit both times. Anyone know what that is all about? I'm guessing it's some kind of trap to catch toll runners. I waited for the green light before proceeding so seemed a little strange.

Some say it's part of the RF-ID receiver mechanisms that a lot of states are using (E-ZPass) and some say it's the stop light since most are using LEDs now...Either way, it would be absolutely stupid for a cop to shoot you while going through a toll. Make sure you mind your rear end in that 45mph zone they drop 1/4 mi prior to the booths, though. =)

I get hit with these pretty regularly in Illinois even in the overhead camera lanes (the ones you can roll through without slowing down). It's probably the infrared lights for the camera, if I had to guess.

Same thing happens to me. Short laser hits when you go through the tolls, not the Sunpass lanes though.

There have been a number of posts regarding this topic already.

The laser measures the height of the vehicle to determine whether the toll rate is for a car or a semi.

On the NH tolls it gives you a laser alert no matter which lane. In that case it is the LED sign that says your free to pass, or please pay.

Clearly 18-wheelers should start placing a series of laser jammers on the top of their cabs to avoid those pesky tolls!

So that's what it is! I always got very confused at the occasional toll roads. Do our jammers have any effect on their device then?
