Default Do you lose your mind when detecting radar?

Guys, I think I may have a problem. I seem to lose my mind when I get the upper hand on an LEO shooting radar. The more difficult the detection, the worse it is. I mean, as soon as I get the first blip on my V1, I slip into this state of alert, oblivious to whatever is going on around me. My gf jokes that she could say she is pregnant and I wouldn't hear her, or just give the nod and "uh-huh".

Then, when I actually see the LEO shooting, I tend to start yelling and cussing out of extreme happiness. Often times, this dialogue consists of me advising that balls should in fact be sucked. Each encounter ends with a light pat of the V1, and then about 5 minutes of basking in the afterglow. If I smoked I would.

    Man I have a problem.......

I slam on my brakes then lose my mind.

My brain is wired to hit the brakes when the detector goes off even when I know it's a false. I could get a SWS alert and still brake.

I always get a bit nervous when my RD is alerting to police radar since I know that the only reason the radar gun is on is because the officer is looking for cash from some unfortunate motorist, and because I know that in general cops hate radar detectors -- period.

Yeah, if I get an alert when I don't expect it, I focus almost exclusively on finding the source, to the detriment of my focus on surrounding traffic and such. It's something I need to work on, but my RX-65's piss poor ramp up doesn't help.

I'm same way here especially going through small towns where most of the speed traps occur. I get really fast heartbeat when I get a Ka alert and of course get excited.

I too generally don't like really small towns since they tend to be fairly corrupt. And yet, there have been several small towns in various states which were very nice -- nice enough that I decided to spend the night there rather than continuing to drive late at night to a larger city.

One town along I-95 in the northeast was a nice town. I think that it was Aberdeen in Maryland. Lots of friendly people at the convenience store which was a few blocks from my motel. The location obviously was near a poorer section of town, and it was mostly African Americans working at or hanging out at the convenience store for lack of anything else to do on a Friday night. Anyway, I chit-chatted with a few patrons, asking if there was any place open in town which had breakfast and where the food was pretty good. I got good directions to a true local town diner only a couple of miles away, and I was told to ask the waitress about the story behind how a sheriff's deputy accidentally shot and killed a diner back in the 1930's.

On the way to the diner, I encountered two local Aberdeen cops running constant-on radar. They were simply out and doing their nightly patrols and most likely looking for DUI's. I kept my speed at 3 over and they ignored me, so I figured that I had their activities pegged right.

Well, at the diner, the waitress told me the whole story and pointed out the stool where the fatally shot patron was seated. It turns out that the sheriff's deputy had just bought a new gun and was going to show it off to the sheriff. Well, the gun accidentally discharged when he pulled it out to show it to the sheriff, and the patron on the stool fell to the floor -- quite dead! It still is quite a famous story for that small town. I got a kick out of it since this type of story isn't something which you hear every day. The food at the diner was great too. It really hit the spot after a long day's drive.

So, not all small towns are corrupt. A lot of them are really quite nice. And, to anyone driving along I-95, its kind of worth it to stop by Aberdeen MD and visit the diner just to hear the story and to see a diner which basically is still in its original as-built condition. Good people there in Aberdeen MD. You can strike up a conversation with anyone there.

Good story Mem-tek. Yep, there are plenty of good, honest small towns out there that are nice to stop in. We always stop and eat lunch in Florala on the way to the beach (named Florala b/c it sits on the AL/FL state line). Good folks there.

Sometimes though I can't help but think of the Family Guy episode where Peter becomes a sheriff down south (yes, making fun of myself). The job description consisted of getting drunk (XXX whiskey jugs mind you) and eating pie all day.
