    Default Detector for Philly/NJ Driving?

I am looking to get a radar detector and was hoping for some suggestions. My price range is about $150, but that can be flexible. I targetted the passport 8500 (off ebay) and the Whistler Pro 78 with my own research. 99% of my driving is in Philadelphia or NJ with a good mix of city/highway. Any suggestions?

That Pro-78 should work just fine, go for one of the newer SE models as they have much improved detection. I wouldn't recommend buying off Ebay unless it's an authorised dealer.

Well the 8500 would be from the Escort Ebay Store, so it definately authorized.

Would that change the opinion? I read the GoL comparo and it seemed to have the 8500 well above the Pro 78 wherever possible..

In the Philly/NJ area you are probably going to get A LOT of false signals.
NJ still uses the X band (and Instant On) extensively, so you cannot safely shut it down.

If I were you, I'd save up as long as it takes, until I could get a more expensive RD with good GPS false signal filtering. The false signals will drive you nuts.

That's just my opinion, with driving extensively in the NJ area and having worn down a lot of brake pad on false signal alerts in the past.

If you can't wait the prior recommendation of the 8500 would be my next choice.

    Good luck.

If false alerts rele bother you the escort passport 9500ix - $500...this has the gps....

I personally am fine with some falses and I use a Valentine 1 - $400...best RD IMO....dont start a huge fight people just giving the guy my opinion...

here is a test from 2 years ago which is still good...the guys who did it are members here so it is real unlike most RD reviews...

I have used both a Beltronics STi and Valentine V1. Both work great. The only complaint I have is with the V1 which falses a lot on laser alerts. NJ State Police use laser on both the AC expressway and Garden State Parkway. I had no laser falses with the STI just true alerts, 1 on the AC expressway and 1 down in Maryland.

I like the arrows on the V1 which is currently in my car.

My first RD was the Beltronics RX-65. Within the 1st hour I had it it saved me.

    Just my 2 cents.

I agree with the 9500ix recommendation as far as excellent false signal rejection. It's the "quietest" RD that I've personally ever used.

    Just my opinion.

I love the guys stationed next to Cowtown... I picked up their X band 2 miles away on Wednesday. With a friend later near Malaga and her Cobra RD didn't pick up a signal until we were 100 feet from the cop. I had already spotted him. I've never used any good detectors besides my V1, so it's all I can recommend. Its arrows saved me in Glassboro on Thursday, 2 cops! Whatever you decide to get, don't rely on it too much, if you're driving way too fast with no "rabbit" in front of you, you can still get busted.
