    Honestly, I'd say a V1, X50 or RX65 with a compass duct-taped on it.

I'd have to say either one of the Whistler units with a compass, or the Cobra 9700. Personally, i'd stay away from PNI.

I was looking for an electronic compass for my new mini-van. It has an overhead console with a clock, but no compass. It's a nice van though and much cheaper than the others.

I was in Radio Shack and saw a radar detector on sale for 50% off. "What the heck", I said. The compass is spot on. I checked it with Street Atlas USA using GPS. So after accomplishing what I set out to do I started to wonder about the other part of it...the radar detector! I looked high and low on the internet for any info on the 22-1699 I could get. No reveiws, but there was a good review at RadarTest for the sister unit without the compass (22-1697). Love the features of this unit and it looked like it worked good, but I had to know! I got the RX65 and started comparing. It turns out to be a fairly good. It has POP alert! There is very little POP in my area, but it falses about as much as my RX65, so I guess it works...at least on junk detector blips. It didn't freak out my RX65 either unless you put them VERY close together. X band is almost as good as the RX65. K band not quite as good, but good enough. Ka falses a bit much in town, but out on the highway it's quiet. I did pick up some long range Ka on a few occasions. It's not an RX65, but it works OK. For $50 it's a great buy...and the compass is perfect.

What type of mini-van? A lot of times you can get the overhead console with a compass from a salvage yard or something. Pull the old one down and put the new one up.

The anti-glare tab on my rearview mirror broke in my Impala, so when I replaced the mirror, I found one out of a '96 Caprice that had a digital compass built into the mirror, so I replaced my stock rearview with that mirror. I wasn't about to get a dealer-replacement.

You can also get a mirror from a company called "Gentex." A lot of car manufacturers use their mirrors. Ford, GM, Daimer/Chrysler, Toyota, etc. You can find them at www.mitocorp.com and maybe you could go that route. The detectors with compass generally aren't that great of a detector. I got one a couple years ago for the same reason you did and I ended up getting rid of it 6 months later and got a V1 instead. If you want a good digital compass, either replace your overhead information center, or replace the mirror for one with a compass. Get a good detector like a V1, X50 or RX65.

If you do replace your information center, buy it from a salvage place...don't go to a dealer...they will rape you on it.

Arvetus - I thought about the mirror compass trick. I did not think about salvaging one from another type of console though. My mini-van is an 05 Sedona LX. Love the van, but a compass was NOT an option. Not even on the EX model. Oversight by Kia.

As far as the mirror goes, this mirror is different than the typical "button" mount. I'm not even sure how it comes off, but it's not even the same sized mount as your standard mirror (bigger).

I have the RX65. Love it! I got it initially to test the RS. Now I use it in my work truck. I could always put it in the van. In fact I will on long trips where I use my laptop for GPS NAV.

    Thanks for the ideas!

Honestly, just get one of those small car compasses that stick to your dash and then spend the money on an X50 or comparable detector. Whistlers are good but don't offer the range and filtering of higher-end models, Crapras are--well--Crapras, and PNIs, eh, I've heard very good things about them, and I've heard very bad things about them. I try to avoid cordless detectors in general, as you suffer a serious loss of performance when you lose the cord.

This has to be one of the best recommendations I've seen!

In all honestly allot of clients I tell them to run from any detector that has a compass. Never found a real good detector that had one built in!

Phil: If it's not an option even in a more upscale model, you may not be able to find one. I am thinking of putting one in my Impala, but they were an option you could order, so if I find one, it will fit where it needs to go. If it wasn't even an option, I doubt you will find one that works, unless you retro-fit it with some work.

If you really like the mirror-compass idea, look at the site www.mitocorp.com and read through the install instructions. I believe they can get you the proper bracket for mounting in your foreign vehicle. It's auto-dim too! There is even a model that will display the outside temperature.
