Default Can a detector be mounted vertically?

I searched the forums and all I could find on vertical mounting was blinder heads and its ok for some of them, but what about a Bel STi, can the head unit be mounted vertically? Or at an angle?

Bare with me guys I have a motorcycle and they are illegal here with a $1165 dollar fine and they also take the unit off you. So places to mount this unit are very small and awkward.

Also, it will be behind a plastic fairing (not clear) will this be ok? I dont care about laser im just after the Ka movers, thats where all my tickets are coming from

sure, why not? as long as it has a clear line of sight, i don't see a problem.

oops, i'm an idiot and didnt read the last line. as long as its not metal it wont totally impede the signal, but you may be operating at about 75% effectiveness. someone please correct me if i'm wrong.

metal does cut down on the range but im not sure how much. Example: metallic tints on care windshields

check out mem-teks video demonstrating polarization of radar here:

Most police radar is circular polarized, so horizontal/vertical mounting shouldn't effect your RD's range. You say you're in a RD banned area; if you're in Europe, then your detection range will differ depending on how your RD is mounted and if you encounter a vertically? polarized radar. I'm not an expert on European radars so the BS may be a bit high on this post.

I have run my STI vertical to test several thousand miles and found you lose some off axis detection sensativity, but it is a small amount and not enough to worry about. I found running it vertical in my semi truck on the very far left of the truck with it seeing down the center line of the interstate it gains performance in traffic due to it seeing between the lanes of traffic and the signal not being blocked by trucks in front of me etc. You should find your performance totally satisfactory running it vertical.

    awesome replys thank you guys!

I may be able to mount the RD horizontal but it will then have more "plastic" in front of it, ive been doing a bit of reading and it seems metals have more effect then plastic and wood, I just wish I knew how much it would affect it.

I guess I may just have to experiment a bit, I do live in the country and we have wide open roads here with some minor tree cover around bends.

As I drive on the left side of the road Freebird I may mount it on the right side of my bike to help it see "past" the cars a little better

again, thank you guys thsi info really helped!

p.s Dpate, I am in Australia

The big issue with plastic in front of a RD is that for it to have very little effect on range, the plastic needs have a consistent thickness, not be strongly curved, and of course not painted with any type of metallic looking paint or paint which has metal flakes in it.

Great test Memtek, thanks. I have heard of those vertical mounts for rd's but never seen one.
