Default Cost savings for rd manufacturers

why do manufactuers bother with SWS, POP, and rear laser detection? They are ALL such worthless features. This would be a good way to make improvements without incurring extra costs GET RID off these WORTHLESS features

POP and the SWS aren't completely worthless. I had SWS turned on for a while and I alerted me to a couple of ambulances. As for POP, it is used in some areas. I agree with you on rear laser detection though. Completely useless.

And it probably doesn't cost but a couple cents to implement.

    X2

And we cant forget you will get more sales by adding in value. Most new RD owners i speak to rave about how there RD had SWS until i tell them its not used around here.

However if they took those features out and added ExpertSpec Mode that would be cool, or arrows with Spec mode.

Rear laser detection isn't worthless on the V1. It works great in fact. On the Belscorts however, it's just a lightpipe going from the "rear" lens on the top of the RD into a sensing diode on the board. Total cost to implement, probably 10 cents.

POP is a viable threat in some areas, so RDs that don't have it are behind the times. SWS is a bit of a waste since it's so rare to see it used anywhere, but that's just a software implementation.

Some might consider Expert/Threat or Tech/Spec mode on the higher-end Bels and Escorts to be worthless features too. But it probably only cost them a couple beers to implement.

Want to talk about useless features, look at some of the things found on Cobras. Spectre detection that only detects Spectre I, VG2 alert, and strobe alert... all wastes of electrons. Granted, those are mostly software features just like expert mode, but you'd think Cobra would at least try to make a detector that isn't a complete piece of junk?

I have long argued that laser detection is a complete waste, period. Not just the rear, but the front too.

Anyone know what the V1 cost before it added laser? I'm curious just how much laser ads to an RD.

Cool! That's exactly what I was thinking. Laser added a hundred bucks to the cost of the V1. Insane! Unfortunately, if any manufacturer had the guts to make a detector without laser, it would not sell. Cobra sells like mad because they talk about the 673 bands they supposedly receive. Even though it is completely pointless, not having it would be perceived as an inadequacy to most prospective buyers, and even to the moron salesmen at most stores.
