I just got a new detector. Haven't had one in years but got nabbed near my house the other night for the first time in years as I wasn't paying attention to my speed on an arterial with very very light traffic. A cop has started hanging out there (infrequently) in the past year but never seen one there before that which explains why no ticket (and that I'm usually more careful - guess the city needs more income due to the economy.)
Thought a detector would be some added protection, of course not foolproof.
So here's why I'm doubting if it was worth it to get a detector.
In my city (greater Seattle area), they have freeway traffic flow cameras so you can go online and see what freeways are backed up. There's a K or Ka-band radar at the top of these tall towers (along with a camera). I assume the radar is pointed down at a very steep angle. My detector gives a strong (level 9) Ka band alert for about 2 seconds every time I drive by one of these (or maybe it was K - can't remember for sure). Either way, it is an alert without a frequency ID which is how I know it isn't a state trooper. I've not been able to find any sort of filter setting combo to silence these alerts without turning off the entire band.
The problem is, the places where these cameras are, are probably the most likely places I would speed late at night when there is little traffic. The voice alert and beep always makes my heart jump until I look to see it is an instant level 9 with no RSID. I HATE that. But I'm afraid it is something I just have to learn to live with. But what will most likely happen is over time, I'll ignore alerts around these cameras (unless it is Laser).
In addition, so then I find the thread here listing all the types of radar used in towns in my state. There's a lot more Laser than I thought!
Between the fact there's these freeway cams with radar and wide use of Laser, I'm beginning to think it just isn't worth getting only a detector and not a laser jamming system with it. When traffic is light, the chance the detector will detect laser scatter on a car in front of me is very low.
But I digress. If the guy on the arterial by my house was using K or Ka, a detector would have probably saved me. And that is the circumstance I bought the thing for. But the big potential problem is, if I'm realistic, having a detector in the car makes me drive faster on the freeway now, which increases my chances of a ticket there. So while I may have protection against the Ka band cop on the arterial, I'm a sitting duck to laser especially considering the detector is giving me somewhat of a false sense of security. In essence I feel like I want to get use out of the thing but I may just be setting myself up for more tickets?
