Default Newbie: What's the best for New England driving?

Ok, I hate to actually have to ask this question....and yes I did read *alot* of the information here!

I live in Maine and drive mostly in Maine, NH, Mass. Occasionally in CT, NY, NJ...

I'd like to know what the best overall detector would be for me? Also, when do the new models come out? I don't want to shell out $300 now and in a few weeks see the new models come out....

I have family up in northern Maine (Caribou) and the drive from Portland (home) to Caribou is looong, especially above Bangor where there is no traffic and 110 miles of highway between civilization!

Thanks in advance for your help!

    -Mike

NH has mostly Ka (Stalker Dual or similar), some K (older Kustom stuff), and some laser (Kustom ProLaser I/II/III) on the highways. Maine, I believe is similar (last trip there I saw some Ka and some K). Both states do aircraft VASCAR when the weather is nice as well. Watch for the hash marks on the side of the highway.

MA has Ultralyte laser and is rumored to have some X band units, as well as K or Ka. CT and NY have some POP units, and both states can be sneaky with instant-on and pacing. NY is known for sneaking up from behind and hitting you with Ka. NJ is famous for instant-on X band, but they also have laser.

CT, NY and NJ are probably the most laser-happy of the states you mentioned.

Any good detector will do. I recommend the V1, especially in CT/NY with the laser and sneak attacks from behind.

If you travel on the highways a lot, Veil, Laser Shield, and a jammer are good investments as well.
If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

Any of the top three will do just fine. You need to be worried about Ka in ME, and laser in NH and MA if not ME, too. RX65, X50, and V1 will all do the job just fine on radar (RX65 and V1 seemed pretty much identical on radar in the GOL test.) V1 gets the nod if you want the insane laser detection to round it off, but that would require Veil and possibly a laser shield for it to do you any good. Something new IS coming out within the next couple of months that, sadly, we aren't really allowed to talk about. But read all threads referring to "Brand-X" and you'll get the idea.

I have yet to be disappointed by my V1, and my dad has yet to complain about the X50 I bought for him in June.

ok I'm from the Uk but did 4000 miles in New England last year and have to saw the V1 was excellent there.
I was running the V1 and the Bel 550 and the V1 won hands down.

did a lot of Interstate/US Route driving.
I did see X band being used up around Bar Harbor and around the White Mountains in NH.

    oh yeah Go Pirates !

I'm trying to figure out if the V1 is really worth the extra $100 over let's say the Bel RX65? If the Laser is that good then maybe.... I realize I'd need a Veil or jammer to be totally Laser protected though...

Is Valentine available 3rd party or only at Valentine1?

    Thanks again!

If you don't want to spend the extra $100 on a V1 then get an Escort 8500 X50. It's close to the RX65 for radar performance (slightly weaker on Ka but still more than impressive in my experience), but it detects laser better than the RX65. The red version is cheaper than the RX65 too.

V1s can be purchased from third-party vendors, but they have to pay full retail for them, which means it actually costs more to buy the V1 from someone else than it does to buy it from Valentine directly (usually a $50-75 markup from what I've seen).

As to whether or not it's worth it, that really depends on you. I'm perfectly happy with my X50, but I literally never go more than 15 mph over the limit. I also know the Phoenix area roadways and police habits like the back of my hand (especially the Tempe PD's trapping tendencies), so I feel pretty comfortable with a detector that, while still great, is a definite step down from the V1.

The only detector I would give you a definite no to is the RX-65. The radar detecting capabilities are great, but I've got a friend in college in NH who tells me the police all over New England are laser-happy, and the RX-65 detects lidar about as well as a high-end Rocky Mountain unit (which means, as Roy so eloquently puts it, you'd be better off with a cinder block on your dashboard).

Ok, I just made my Valentine 1 purchase 2 minutes ago!

Now wish me luck explaining that to my wife!

Can't wait, I'll post my results for my driving area for everyone here in New England.....
