    Default "Interesting" Drone Articles

Based on a recent trip through NC on I-40, I encountered many kband alerts with no LEO or other visible sources. Several acted like "instant on". So after some research, I've learned that I was droned (repeatedly). These drones aren't too expensive and it would suck if their use proliferated.

This maybe old news but I thought I'd share the articles

One takeaway is that Cobra makes drones....Also the study reviews the methods for determining if vehicles have radar detectors and the decrease in speed through droned areas (rear laser shots).

I guess the FCC is Ok with garbage radar sprayed all over the highways...Makes me wonder if I loaded my car with drones would I be legal?

That is quite interesting. They say the radar drones are used to mimic the police radar, so radar detector users can slow down and realize there is work up ahead. They must think (or hope?) that a lot of drivers use radar detectors.

Only places I've seen radar drones were in a busy city center. I thought it was rather pointless considering the drones were always placed beside 10 X and K door openers.

This is about 10 miles of drone after drone after drone. It's solid radar through this entire construction zone outside of Augusta Ga.

I have had LEOs hiding in the fog there before

Wow, I just read the "Attack of the drones" article. Augusta is on the border with SC so maybe there is a connection.

I also ran into a construction zone where a guy was working on one of those platforms low to the road removing reflective dots. Another guy was on the CB warning truckers about the work and asking them to help slow down the 4-wheelers. I've only ran into this one time and it was on I-20 outside of Augusta.

I wonder if that was part of this study?

The ones around I-40 in Raleigh/Durham were K band. They even pulse like instant on. There was no construction at all, just miles of intermittent k band alerts on an open highway.

I can understand the construction thing and putting the drones on big signs, but the ones in NC are totally hidden. At least with your Ka signs you call always test your RD Ka performance.

The Raleigh/Durham area uses K band drones for traffic monitoring. Consult this web site, speedinfo.com There you can see where this company has K band traffic sensors in place around the country.

sounds like a good place to turn on Autolearn. better than ignoring every k band alert through that area.

i live and work in NC...i travel for a living throughout the state. my territory includes long stretches of I-40, I-85, and all of I-77.

i plan on investing in a RD in the near future, and i will make a habit of reporting back to this website about my findings.

lots of nice scenary in NC...enough scenary to distract drivers...enough scenary to hide LEOs very easily...

I think you will need good countermeasures. I saw some pretty aggressive enforcement on I-40 (as well as lots of drones)....I encountered Ka and X band as well as 10 or so k band drones. I like my V1 but given the drones, I might be inclined to get a Escort GPS detector (9500CI) to silence those things. Actually if you are the highways a lot, a V1 and the 9500CI would be ideal. You can always disable the k band on the V1. Also I think reckless driving is added if you speed above a certain limit. Be careful.

typically, when i'm working, i don't speed. i'm not sure what the penalty is, but since i'm in a company vehicle, i don't want to chance it too many times. my plan is to use my work van for "recon" so that when i bust out the bimmer, i will have a better understanding of how my RD works and what kind of performance i can expect as a result.

you can just consider me a volunteer employee for RD.net...
