    Default Leo's Preferred Tool : Laser or Radar ?

    I doubt any Leo would give his comment about. But if you were one , what would be your cherished tool ?

    Do Leo have any input on the equipment purchased ?

    By this questionning I try to figure out if laser will predominate in the future , what is your guess ?

    today's esquiew I saw on the 40 est just coming into the island was definately radar, my speedometer hover around the 100 mark but that is not km/h.... I think on a day like today, I would NOT want to use laser, too cold... in summer it might not be so bad.

    I would prefer laser though, because you aim at the car, and you know that car is the one you are reading... but there are errors with laser just as with radar, more...

    I would be surprised if laser, in it's current state, predominates radar in the future. I think they currently both have their place in speed enforcement.

    Radar = Best for "general" use
    Laser = Best for picking out one vehicle in a crowd, such as heavy traffic

    With radar, an officer on regular patrol can simply leave his radar on, and if he happens to see someone speeding, he can pull them over. Plus he can get a good idea of the general traffic flow for a section of road. He can also use it in instant-on mode if he so chooses.

    Laser requires much more active involvement from the officer, as he has to target a specific vehicle. I think this is the main reason we have not seen "moving laser" introduced yet. It would be difficult to impossible for an officer to target a specific vehicle while he is driving, without having a partner in the passenger seat to do it for him, which would require another officer to be paid, or taken away from doing something more useful.

    If anything, we might see Laser replace a lot of the handheld police radar in the future. But I don't think laser will replace radar, unless a time comes that we see technology offer a laser solution that replaces the functionality of regular "patrol car mount" radar.

    Well that depends:

    Personally I would have 3 stances on this: (Rural/City/Thruway-HighTraffic-)

    (Rural area not much traffic)
    The first being in a rural area on a semi-main road (one direction each way 55mph). If I was an LEO I would prefer to sit at night on the far side of a steep hill.... and wait for a car to come into the flat...and before their headlights could see me ...hit them with some nice instant on 'K' band.

    It would look like the following:

    X_____0_/\\_______<--------

    'X'= Me
    ____=Flat area of road
    "/\" Hill
    "0" Point I would target them at (during night)
    <----- Direction of cars I would target.

    Also I would sit off a blind curve until someone was facing me dead on...far off in the distance at night (so their headlights couldn’t get me) and when they came around the curve.... just before they hit dead on angle with me (no cosine for them) I would smack them with some instant on.

    City: Sit in a medium traffic flow area... day or night, were people routinely speed 5-8 over. Hide behind a row of parked cars... A building... Just up from a local drug store/express mart (there are a few in the city with small gradient changes.) So what I’m saying is: it is flat then there is a stop light....then there is a slow gradient that the drug store/convenience store etc etc sits on. Id sit on the flat part...off the side of the road targeting people coming up the hill with instant on K or Pop or k band constant for that matter -because the auto doors- (maybe laser).... But the radar would work well...because I would take MY RD's out find the highest areas of 'k band falsing' (when I am off duty) jot them down... then on duty sit up just behind them (like the scene I described) so someone coming up the hill with an RD by the drug store/market etc etc would think its the 'k' band door opener because the signal since they are still on the hill side probably wouldn’t be full alert and they may dismiss it as false.

    Thruway (and other very busy roads)....sit on far side of overpass...(so I couldn’t be seen by the 2-3-4 or however many lanes oncoming of traffic) With a laser tripod and 2 OR 3 LEO chaser vehicles on the off ramp and 2-1 mile down the road.....1 chaser...1 using instant on (both hidden). So that is the person with an RD got hit with a laser (from behind by me on the overpass)....and slowed down accordingly for a
    little bit.... then speed back up to more then what they was doing before (to think maybe they would outrun the cops and loose them....even if they didn’t get lit up...just because they know they was speeding they know they was caught...maybe they think that the cop just is taking his time to come up behind them and light them up and they increase their speed to 'hit the next ramp' or 'hide in the crowd') I would tell the instant on in front of them to watch for people speeding excessively watching their rear (from me) so when they are checking their rearview 24-7 paint them with instant on (or even laser) from the front and basically overload and scare the *BEEP* out of them...not to mention give them a ticket...and correlate with the officers up the road (so i can tell them people who hit the brakes (possible rd) and would possibly speed up a bit....so when they get them down the road We have 2 speeds instant on and laser from me. (much harder to fight) -That is if I don’t radio to the onramp boys that the guy is already speeding to hefty-

    That would be me.

    On the Thruway, on a turn where the driver cannot see up ahead is usually find. Add that to being on the right side of the road, instead of the median, and that's one nasty laser trap.

    If I were a LEO, my choice would be radar as I was sitting on a onramp instant oning cars from behind.

    If I were an LEO I would focus on drivers that refuse to yield to cars with the right of way, cars refusing to allow faster motorists to pass, cars well exceeding the 85th percentile speed, whatever that may be, and I dont think traffic enforcement would be my prime mover, I'd want to really focus on murderous thugs, rapists and robbers, and screw traffic enforcement altogether. But thats just if I were an LEO.

    I think it would depend on where the LEO works. If I were a LEO working and it is cold outside, I would keep my A$$ in the car and run radar.

    If I were a LEO in nice weather and just wanted to bust a lot of people, I would use instant on forward facing Stalker Ka radar from the rear in a hidden location or I would laser headlights with an LTI Ultralyte LR100. I would be sure to act like an a$$hole when I stop the motorist and then I would remind them in a smart a$$ tone that this is not a speed trap since there is a sign posted on the road that notifies you of the speed limit. I wouldn't cut anyone a break, not even good looking women with tig ol bitties. j/k of course.
