Have any of you noticed that very small percentage of police officers have their on-board radar on? I mean, I see them driving around every day, but very rarely do I get a radar alert. I'm just making sure that there's not something wrong with my detector!

That simply means that they prefer to use instant-on radar instead of leaving it on all the time.

Not all LEOs are doing traffic duty, and not all cruisers are equipped with radar.

And those that are, some use instant-on.
If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

In Ft Lauderdale I have yet to find a LEO using instant on for over 2 years using a radar detector. They all seem lazy and leave them on constant on. I would not doubt that there are LEO's that do shoot instant on somewhere in south florida, but generally speaking, if they have a gun its on, or they are off duty, and shut it completely off.

But what percentage, do you estimate, of the LEOs that you see, have their gun on? Because almost none of the LEOs I see driving around set my detector off.

Honestly all LEO's that I have seen that have a radar gun have it ON, keep in mind I see a equal amount if not more officers that do NOT have a radar gun. Again it is just my experience in my particular area in south FLorida, that any LEO, city, sheriff, trooper, they all run constant ON, I have never rolled up on a cruser or a cruser roll up on me with radar shut off. And just to reiterate, I have seen many officers on the road that are NOT equiped with a radar gun (just like your experience). I am sure there are LEO's out and about using instant on, I just count myself lucky, and try not to let my guard down, I will put it this way, I am always on the look out for instant on.

Now if your saying that you see many LEO's with a radar gun, but you have no alert, and possibly meaning that they are running instant on (the unit is not transmitting, essentially being in off mode untill needed. Then that is a cause for concern.

All troopers that I have seen have a radar unit in their vehicle. About a quarter to a third of local police department that I have seen have radar guns. The BSO (Broward Sheriff Officers) I have seen, about a quarter of them have a radar gun. So say if in a day driving around if I see #10 officers (mix them up state, county, local city) about 2-3 have radar gun eqiupment.

To specify even more, troopers run exclusively Ka, sheriff runs moslty K but has some Ka (motocyle officers seem to always have Ka), local city officers are predominately K (again motocycle officers may use Ka). Laser is become a bigger part equally in all agencies. Mainly used in big coordinated speed traps.
