Default Lower cost (but still good) RD with GPS

    Hello!
A friend of mine asked my opinion on a first RD.

Said friend is a smart guy and would have no problem with even a V1 as a starter RD, but is probably not looking to spend $400+.

He mentioned the Cobra 9960G. I see RadarRoy actually gives it 'ok' marks in his review, but I am wondering if there are any (not Cobra) RD's with a GPS feature that are not too expensive.

The only other one I know if is the 9500xi which is $500...

Any 'decent' RDs with GPS in the $250 or less price range?

You can get the 9500ix for $400 from an independent reseller including the one that sponsors this website if you call them and ask for a discount. If you want cheaper than that you may get a Bel GX-65 for $380.

Going down to a Cobra is a waste of time - there is no such thing as okay when it comes to police countermeasures. It either works well or it doesn't and I have direct experience that the Cobra 9960G does not work well.

    I 100% agree with batman75. Stay away from Cobra's.

In my opinion, either spend a good amount of money on a RD or just dont spend the money at all.
I have heard nothing but great things about the RX-65. Also I just picked up a refurbised escort passport 8500 from ebay for $150 and its amazing. Doesnt have the Gps or pop mode, but neither are needed for my daily use. I would also recomend the V1, if I had the money Id be all over that thing.

Escort C65 provides same functionality as RX65 with a nicer female voice for a bit less dough.

What does he want the GPS for?

IF it is not false-alert suppression...

A V955+Cheetah C50 could be a cheap solution for him...

Where does your friend plan to use this detector? Don't see much use for the GPS if its only for false alert suppression and he's not in a highly populated area. Detectors can be programmed to be quiet, just not 9500 series quiet, and if he wants GPS for cameras there are other options like AirMoore suggested.

Yes GPS is only useful in cities like Tristate area, LA, SF, Miami, Atlanta, Phoenix (pretty much any real city) for false alert suppression, or in areas with lots of speed traps like Arizona.

You can always buy an Escort 8500 from their ebay store $149.99and add the sc55 $179.00. Or buy a used 9500ix.
