So, I was looking for a new RD for my gf, and I came across this site. She had a cheap cobra, borrowed from a friend, and has made it clear that the only two things she really wants this Christmas is a good radar detector and a GPS.
On that note, here is the current situation. She's a daily driver, home to work (about 15 minutes away, mostly highway), but occasionally travels a good bit along big stretches of highway, alot of it being 78, 80, and sometimes 23/46 (we're in western NJ btw).
Based on what features I figure will be good in a GPS, I'm currently leaning toward the Garmin nuvi 1390T. I mention the GPS for the purposes of feature elimination... I don't consider the traffic light cam issue to be a big deal, I don't believe they have them out by me, or many stationary ones, but there is a feature to add those locations to the GPS if I want to.
So, what I'm looking for is a high quality all around solution, and based on what I'm reading, the Valentine 1 seems to be the way to go. $400 (from them direct - why is it so much on Amazon ($620)?? Anyone know?), so the price is reasonable, and I figure the rear-view mirror mounting kit as a nice extra. Its upgradeable, and they seem to be very into providing service. My personal biggest annoyance is the idea that I'll buy a radar detector, and have it be relatively useless in a year when they make a slight change to radar tech.
So, right now the V1 seems to be the top pick for me. It does a great job of detecting, everything else is kind of secondary, and the price isn't too bad.
The other big component here is ease of use. I geek out. I love tech. I have ridiculous toys.... my gf? Not so big on the tech. It needs to be simple. Plug in, pretty lights say to slow down, she slows down. The arrows are kind of cool, and the display looks much simpler than other radar detectors I've seen, so I *think* the V1 is great in this regard too, but obviously I have no experience with it.
Am I going in the right direction on this? Am I better off with a Beltronics RX65 or something? Any must-haves with the V1? Thanks!
