Default Bel STI ? for Canadians

    Question...

If the new Bel STI is $449.00 USD and it's cost prohibitive in Canada why don't you drive across the border, purchase it and drive back home with it?
Now, I know it's illegal and all that but my rather naive question is this...

Is it common that the border people thouroughly search the cars with a fine tooth comb? I mean you can just take the unit and the cord and stuff it someplace?

Is it worse to do this or to buy it at full Canadian price then get caught with it?

No need to flame, just wondering...

A Canadian associate just informed me that the penalties are high and they wouldn't try it. But he said there are lots of people getting theirs confiscated and wonders how they're getting them in the Country, too! So nevermind....

Its a provincial jurisdiction not federal. Soooo one could have it mailed to Alberta and then reshipped to Ontario.

But I think most do as you suggest and just go "buy over the river" as we used to say in Windsor.

But its still illegal to possess and thats enough to dissuade most Canadians.

Thanks Spanky, just seems to me I'd rather save the money and stash it in my car than run the risk of mailing something "illegal" across the border. You could always say, "it wasn't mine officer, some American left it in my car".
In Virginia, it's legal to own the thing but not use it. Go figure, that's why I thought it was foolish to pay $1100 for a $450 receiver!

No saying that exactly, someone posted that there are some "sources" in Canada charging that much for the unit. (I can't locate the exact thread but it's here someplace) At the current exchange rate, of course it would be less than that. Still, it's significantly more than $449.95!

Default importing a detector into Ontario.

Firstly. Detector ownership is not illegal in Ontario. (Reference to Spanky's post above.) The highway traffic act prohibits the use of a detector in a motor vehicle. (you could walk around the street with your detector, this is actually legal.) You could purchase one online and have it shipped to you. I've done this in the past. The detectors are duty free, you are liable for shipping costs, PST and GST.

Canada Customs enforces federal customs regulations. So, if you drove across the Ontario border with a detector on your windshield, they could (and would) do nothing about it. I usually take my detector down as I'm waiting in line to cross back into Canada.

Technically, if you bought the detector in the US you would declare it at the border and pay any applicable taxes (if you didn't qualify for the the 48hour or 7 day exemption.) You could however, buy it and throw away the box and stick it in your glove compartment (but Canadians never smuggle anything across the border do they!!)

    Hope this helps.
